We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Wedderburn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew that once I got to a certain age I wanted to be in control of my own income and not work for anyone else. I was a paralegal for a long time out of college. Which I enjoyed. But once I fell in love with makeup and how it made people feel, I knew that was the career path for me
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a makeup artist here in Houston. I started in 2009 after grad school. Started a MAC counter then created my own business and salon. Not easy, but the challenges definitely helped shape my career. Overcame challenges by challenging myself. Fitness is also a passion of mine. I bodybuild and it helps keep me motivated and increase my self esteem. Self made brand and want to continue to inspire people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend would love a place to listen to live music or poetry. I wish there were more poetry lounges or events in Houston. Live music we’d probably go downtown. Definitely do yoga, which she loves, and spend time making new memories. May even drive down to Austin for a show. .
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have been a great influence. They always encouraged us to do our best.
