Meet Derrick Lawson: Entertainment Marketing & PR

We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Lawson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derrick, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking has played an essential role in my life and career. I have also believed that without risks there are no rewards. Doors will not open if you don’t take the first step to either knock or open it. Fear of failure used to prevent me from taking risks. Then one day I woke up and realized that I was constantly failing because I never stepped out of faith and took the risk. You will never move forward if you don’t take the risk and make the first move!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Abstract XM is a full-service entertainment marketing and pr firm. We offer services in the following areas: public relations, marketing, advertising, event planning, brand/product development. Abstract XM was started due to overwhelming requests to assist or collaborate with various projects. It just made start a business as a centralized access point. We treat all of our clients like family. In order to effectively assist a business, we must step in their shoes, to see things from the client’s perspective.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting would go on the distillery tour and visit the different brewers, to the Escape Room, and then visit various local restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to “Shoutout” Ludacris, Disturbing the Peace Records (DTP) for giving me the opportunity to learn and teach me the industry. This was a wonderful, priceless experience. I would like to give flowers (Calla Lillies) to Christina Johnson. She taught me organization and how to be fair in business. All praises and respect go to Cee Lo Green. He allowed me to be creative and challenged me to be creative. Last, but most recently, I have to “Shoutout” the Industry Connect Show on Clubhouse, created by D Castro. This is an online room created during the pandemic giving other industry professional and indie artists the opportunity to connect.
