We had the good fortune of connecting with Deuce B and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deuce, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Over time, I’ve adopted the “just do” mentality. A lot of times in the past, I’ve second guessed decisions and overanalyzed outcomes, which prevented me from taking the first step. The “just do” mentality runs counter to that. It’s basically a way for me to refocus and just create without worrying about the outcome. As an independent artist, you can’t be so hyper-focused on the ROI. That comes with time, but the most important thing is building catalog and a community of fans to support you long term. That starts with just putting your art out. It took a while to learn this, but being consistent with my art and sharing it with the world has been paying off, so far.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an independent artist from Houston, Texas, but I’m currently based in San Diego. My sound was heavily influenced by mixtape Lil Wayne early on, and I always wanted to hone my craft and be a super lyrical artist. However, nowadays, I’m very focused on producing melody driven music. Most of my songs are centered around love and romance as well as the journey from struggle to transcendence. At our core, we strive for love, whether it be romantic, familial, or something else. I gravitate towards those type of songs because it’s so universal. What I’m currently most excited about is the growth that lies ahead. I’m constantly creating, and I always want my next song to be my best song. By no stretch of the imagination am I famous or rich at the moment, but I’m proud of where I currently am in my musical journey. It’s because of my consistency and passion for growing my sound that I am where I am. It wasn’t easy per-se. The mental blocks were the hardest to overcome, but seeing other successful independent artists, like Chance the Rapper, Russ, and Kota the Friend made me realize that it’s possible to get to a higher level without a label backing me. If there was one thing that I’d want the world to know about me and my brand, it’s that I’m living proof that consistency and constant growth is the key to getting whatever you want in this life. Keep pushing!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If one of my friends from out of town was visiting Houston, I’d definitely take a stop over to Shipley’s. For me, it reminds me of good childhood memories. Growing up in Third Ward, I used to go to the Shipley’s behind Yates before heading to school to energize me for the day. It’s a simple pleasure, but a pleasure nonetheless. Next stop would be Discovery Green. Seeing so much green and liveliness amidst the cityscape is so refreshing, in my opinion, and I’d want to share that with my friend as well. I’m a simple guy, so outside of the basics like Kolache Factory, Whataburger, and Frenchy’s (the one off Scott, duh), I’d spend most of the time bringing my friend around the people I grew up with. I’ve been a lot of places and met a lot of people from different backgrounds, so it always interesting to have them meet the people I grew up to see world’s collide, for lack of a better term, haha.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d say my parents, Elaine and Ken. It may seem like a cop out because I’m sure parents are the go to shoutout, but honestly, the support I received since the beginning is amazing. I did really well in school, and my family’s focus was always education. With that in mind, I felt hesitant to reveal that I wanted to pursue music, but when I did, instead of being shut down, I was completely supported in my passions.
