We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Miles, Nd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wasn’t sure how exactly I was going to start right after school, so I went on a couple health retreats after I finished. After those retreats, there was just one answer, and that was “I am going back home to Houston and starting my own business.” I cannot say that this was a calculated decision, but it was the one and only decision that my mind decided.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business: I provide natural approaches to autoimmunity, cardiovascular and kidney health, digestion, and prevention, and I work virtually with clients.
Proud of: when I take on cases where I have to go deeper, I find the issues that others missed, and then I help my clients in a matter of months to improve what they had been having issues with for years.
What sets me apart:
-There are other issues of life and mindset that, before working with me, some of my clients may not fully realize are also part of why they physically suffer. While I do the work that most would describe as physical or tangible in nature, I also help my clients feel validated in and work on those other issues through natural means (because plants can have physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual characteristics). This can help them to improve their health faster.
-Though there are holistic and integrative health professionals that work on kidneys, there are not too many who focus on and market it, hence you would not know. Kidney health is something I have been helping others with since the beginnings of my business.
Was getting to where you are today easy: Entrepreneurship was not easy for me. The main thing that has been helpful for me is that I just keep going because I simply enjoy the work I do.
Suggestions based on what I have learned:
– Find a few mentors that you can ask detailed questions to and observe and/or work with for some time for the purpose of not only learning how they do the work, but also how they built and maintain the business. It does not mean you have to do things exactly like them, but it is just so you have a starting point. These mentors should represent one or a few elements of the vision you have for your business. Try to not get too comfortable in an environment that you actually don’t want to stay in long-term, though it may be ‘great’ in certain ways. Keeping your vision in mind can help you make decisions that fall in line with that vision.
– Understanding what works for you can be challenging but the longer you keep going, the more that the knowledge of this may start to surface.
What I want the world to know about me or my brand:
– 1) I simply enjoy finding the integrative ways to help someone and watching those ways work. 2) I have a very diverse clientele in terms of age, ethnicity, gender, and gender preferences.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh Houston is so big (with so many surrounding areas too) that there are multiple things for everyone, so it really depends on what they like. I would be asking them questions prior to attempting to make an itinerary, but that is also because I am an explorer and I don’t have favorite places. Instead, I use the facebook ‘events’ tab, eventbrite and meetup.com to find what is going on that interests me. With that said, a few places that come to mind are City Centre (outlet with several business and restaurants and a nice place to hang out), Vintage Park (similar to City Centre), Honey Hole (restaurant), Bella Green (restaurant), Reggae fest, Renaissance Festival, Day 6 (coffee shop) and The Riot at Rudyards (weekly amateur comedy).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family, always.
