We had the good fortune of connecting with DeVita Woods-Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeVita, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is the drive and ambition I have to break generational curses. My company started out as a side hustle, but essentially grew larger over the years. After I got a taste of entrepreneurship I knew that I had to do whatever necessary to ensure the company was successful, as I did not want to go back to working in the petrochemical field. At the time my business started, I just had twins and being away from them during their first year of life weighed heavily on me. The company and brand I created, as well as a few other businesses I am currently working on will always be indispensable. This is due to the fact that the services being provided will be needed for years to come. The driving force behind what I consider to be my success is establishing generational and intangible wealth for my children as well as their children’s children.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I think what sets me apart from others is that when I say I’m for the people I truly mean it! I’ve been the same way since I started my business in the sense that my values didn’t change when the money did. I’m never going to intentionally try and “get over” on anyone and I’m going to tell you what you need to hear whether you like it or not. I’m not afraid of turning down business if it goes against my morals and what I know to be true. When I started my business I literally jumped off the porch meaning I didn’t like the deceptive business practices the company I started with had so I took the knowledge I gained from them and started my own practice. I didn’t have a business plan or a lot of money I just knew that I didn’t like what was being offered to the community and I wanted to be able to change the narrative in this industry. Prayer, being able to overcome and pivot when needed is what has kept going when challenges arise. Running a business is definitely not for the weak as there will be a lot of late nights and early mornings coupled with stress from all facets of the business. I have definitely learned more than a few much needed lessons along the way, but I now look at it as acquired knowledge. I now know how and what to do moving forward so I’m thankful for those lessons. The most important factor to me when it relates to my brand is trustworthiness and longevity as I want my businesses to outlive me. One piece of advice I would give to all new business owners is go into it knowing you can’ t please everybody!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Places to eat would be dependent on what she has a taste for. The list of food places; Ray’s BBQ
The Turkey Leg Hut (serves as food, drink and hang out)
Taste Bar Kitchen
Davis St
Just Oxtails (Soul Food)
Lucille’s
Upper Kirby Bistro
Drinks/Hangout
Bar 5015
The Savoy
Cleo Lounge
Bar 8
You can check out The Galleria for shopping, Miller Outdoor Theater for a concert, and possibly a sporting event depending on what season it is.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to give God all the glory as without him I wouldn’t be where I’m at today or even recognized in this series. I would also have to thank my husband, mom and children for believing in me and always rooting for me. My friends and family who not only support, but mention my name in rooms of opportunities. Shoutout to the ladies who rocked with me when all I had was a vision and who are still rocking with me to this day. Last but not least I’d like to thank my clients who trust me year after year ya’ll are the real MVPs.
