We had the good fortune of connecting with Devyn Giovengo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devyn, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
The answer is to always keep going. Yes we all face hardships but that’s just apart of life and apart of business in general. I’ve had drives crash and have to repay clients thousands of dollars, I’ve had death close to me, close business partners fold on me, the list goes on but I could never end my journey for anything. I feel like everything happens for a reason so everything that is happening isn’t because of the position you’re in or because life just sucks. It is all meant to happen wether it’s positive or negative. Obviously many things that happen are at least somewhat avoidable but at the same time everything happens for a reason.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I’m most proud of from my work is to see how far I’ve came. I started not super long ago but have had people in multiple different cities approach me and say things like “are you Gio Made It? I love your work!” And to me that’s crazy because I’m not a rapper or some type of musician. I shoot videos and do graphic design work, so for me to not show my face often but people in many different cities and states notice me is really cool to me.
Of course, none of this was easy but me TopOpp Juice, VOE DA$H and Kelfromvisions helped me grow as they grew as artists. They were all patient with me and watched me grow and develop from the start. These are my brothers who day by day always gave me that extra push to keep going.
I learned a ton of lessons on the way, one being your gut is like your second brain (shoutout to Kelfromvisions for this one), but if your gut is telling you something about a situation or a specific person it is always right and trust it. Don’t trust a soul until they give you reasons and evidence that they’re official (most of the times they’re not).
What I would like people to really realize about my brand and story is, I never really cared about money, clout or anything like that. Truthfully, I couldn’t care less about either of those things. I’m doing this to share my messages/art with the world and to show people they can do anything they desire in life. People told me growing up that I would never be able to do a lot of the things I’d tell them I was going to do so day by day I just try to show the world that anything is possible.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s crazy because my boy D from Baltimore is in Pittsburgh right now and I was just showing him a few spots. My favorite spots in Pittsburgh are the overlook in MT. Washington but not the actual overlook, the dirt spot underneath. The color park is a cool spot too I shot a few videos there. And lastly, coming out of the FT. Pitt Bridge is always fun to show tourists for the first time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe any type of success I have to all of my family and friends since they’re the ones that have been behind me the entire time but specifically my mom, dad and my grandparents. Specifically, I have to thank my mom and dad for those times where it looks like I’m in a rough position of my life but they let me keep fighting. After I started really working and chasing my dreams instead of working a regular 9-5 my parents have been behind me and never brought up me getting a job or try to bring me down in any type of way. I also watch them and get motivated because of how hard both of them work.
I owe a big shoutout to my grandparents too for helping me since I was a baby. My parents had me young and realistically if they could’ve raised me without them it would’ve been a much more difficult journey for everyone.
My friends are always behind me 100% as well. Any of my “friends” you ever see me with at this point are now adopted as family. I was an only child until about 5 years ago when my little brother was born so growing up any friends I get close with and meet I look at as my blood brothers and sisters since growing up I didn’t have any so I spent a lot of times with my friends.
