We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ D WELLS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ, what is the most important factor behind your success?
As a DJ and entrepreneur in general, there honestly isn’t just one factor that I would say contributed to the growth and success of my brand. Being that I am entering my 9th year as a DJ, through my own experience and journey I’ve learned over time that there are quite a few factors that have all worked simultaneously to grow and expand my brand. One of the most important factors behind my success as a DJ would be the simple fact that I’ve always been super authentic and genuine when it comes to interacting and networking with others. I feel as though through the years I’ve encountered many amazing opportunities and offers as well as networked and connected with many like-minded individuals in the industry because I’ve always been myself and focused on myself, while also focused on providing good vibes and energy to wherever I’m working at.
As a mixologist, providing good vibes and energy through sound is also something extremely important to me. Being a DJ is also something I just truly enjoy doing, and because of these factors I have attracted a lot of genuine opportunities and connections rather than searching and looking for them.
Personally, I would say that at the end of the day, it all comes down to your ability to experiment with your craft and better your skills, be consistent, and be disciplined. I feel as though in doing these things as well as staying in my own lane, these are factors that I’ve learned over time that have truly contributed to my success in building my brand.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think of and refer to myself as a mixologist. I have always had a passion for music, and what I love the most about my job as a DJ is just to see everyone in good spirits, good vibes, and good energy. I love that my passion for music has the power to do that. What sets me apart from others is the simple fact that I am myself and in my own lane. I put out great, genuine energy, and in return I’ve received the same from all of my supporters and people I’ve networked with along the way.
I’m overall just excited to see what the future holds. I love to DJ and network in Houston because this is home, but I’m looking forward to traveling and doing what I do how I do it in other states outside of Texas. I got to where I am today professionally with hard work, consistency, genuine love and energy, and also simply believing in myself and what I do. I am hoping by continuing to do this, it will allow me to expand my passion for music to other cities and states. It wasn’t always a smooth road, but I couldn’t have made it this far without the help and support of my family, team, and supporters. I love my family and everyone that supports me deep.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Throughout my DJ career I have DJ’d at majority of the hottest spots in the city such as Urban Social, The Address, Bar 2200, CRU, Gemini Lounge, Grooves, Rose Gold Cocktail Den, Therapy, Live Oak, Dior, and more.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a great deal of people who I would love to give a shout out to that have helped along my journey. I want to give a brief shoutout to Texas Southern University as well as all of my classmates and peers who helped get my name out there. I also want to give a brief shoutout to all of my supporters and overall everyone that keeps me booked up!
I definitely want to give a special shout out my family and strong support system, they keep me going. I also want to give a special shoutout to my branding and marketing specialist, Sydney Person, for making sure the overall look and feel of my brand is continuously super professional and top tier over the years.
