We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Rosez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
Diane Guerrero wrote in her book first book, “our passions don’t just compel us, but they can also heal us.” This quote resonated with me so much that I now have it tatted on my left arm and I read it every day as a reminder to what I stand for. I love this quote so much because while in the process of understanding your passions, you can find healing within. In college I did a lot of community advocacy work which later turned into a passion for social justice and with that knowledge I started healing and really finding myself.. Working in grassroots, you are constantly reminded the lack of rights marginalized communities have and while very upsetting, its the community gatherings and unity provided by unheard voices that really make this work so special. I found healing within my people, and that will always resonate with me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is DJ Rosez and I am a DJ and an event curator. At its core I truly care about creating a space for marginalized communities especially queer women poc’s. My goal is at that every gig I play, all women feel safe, respected and uplifted. At my start of my career I did mixes only highlighting women, as women musicians get paid much less compared to men. I think because of this many people have been compelled to continue attending events where I am at.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had friends coming to town, I would take them to tikila’s on a Tuesday for our weekly loteria night hosted by Vickawithanaccent and I powered by WEPA. I also would take them to barbarella’s as they have a great emo night the first tuesday of each month.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am happy you all have this feature as it takes a whole community for people to prosper. I am extremely grateful for the many opportunities received this last year and the many people I have gotten to work it. I want to give a special shout out to the incredible women in the night scene who continue to pave for more of us within the industry. A big shout to MLE, who absolutely kills all her sets and is inspiration to many of us especially to me. You are so talented without a doubt and the events you have been curating are so special! A shout out to Caribbeats who has been described as a engineer during the day and a dj at night. Her professionalism, pride in her nationality and song selection make her sets super special. Lastly, a big shout to Vicka with an Accent who every Tuesday treats us to great mc-ing skills at our weekly Loteria night. Vicka is a whole party package as she really lightens a room up with her jokes and manner. I really appreciate what all you ladies do.
