We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Joy Blackwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique Joy, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Seeing a need for energetic, nonprofit work in this area, we formed our organization to provide sensible solutions through self esteem programs, scholarships, and community outreach. We’ve consistently grown since then, all thanks to the helping hands of this amazing community!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The mission for The Esteemed Project is to focus on making the maximum positive effort for our community. Through our programs we focus on promoting positive self esteem, empowerment, and body positivity. Our members and volunteers provide the momentum that helps us affect change. Through partnerships, we provide solutions that make a long-lasting difference.
We have three programs:
Rising Stars
Rising Stars is the flagship self esteem program offered by The Esteemed Project. This free self esteem curriculum is available to young girls between the ages of 5 and 17. We have partnered with Dove’s self esteem program to bring you the best curriculum.
Community Outreach
The Esteemed Project is dedicated to putting our Houston community first. Our Community Outreach program provides a much-needed service for those in dire need. Lend a helping hand and join our efforts today.
Scholarships
Even as college becomes a more common choice for students from all backgrounds, first-generation students are placed at a disadvantage.
Due to the more limited career opportunities that adults without college degrees have, many first-generation students come from low-income or middle-class families that don’t have the resources necessary to pay for their college expenses. Additionally, first-generation students are forced to be more independent due to the limited guidance and mentorship they have.
This scholarship aims to support minority students who are interested in breaking generational barriers by being the first in their families to attend college.
Any first-generation, BIPOC undergraduate student pursuing a two or four-year degree may apply for this scholarship if they have non-profit or volunteering experience.
To apply, tell us how you’re working to address an important societal issue, who you are as a person, and how you plan to help the world through your career.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For fun I enjoy the theatre.
I’m in love with broadway or a good movie!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my mother, may she rest in heaven, for instilling in me the attributes needed to be caring, dedicated, and loving.
