We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. LaToya Lockett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. LaToya, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Best Learning Solution (BLS) is an idea I have been thinking about for approximately 10 years. I have been a Nurse Educator for over 15 years. During this time, I have had the privilege of educating, training, motivating, inspiring, and watching hundreds of nurses grow and excel in our profession. I have heard several celebrities say, “I don’t work, I love what I do” and I knew one day, I wanted to be able to say that. I quickly realized when I am teaching, mentoring, and interacting with others, I feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment in my life.
Unfortunately, with the common events in the world today, such as mass shootings and losing my nephew to gun violence, I have an increased desire to train everyone beyond healthcare. It is my mission to teach as many people as possible the life-saving skills they may need to use at any place and at any time. More people would survive injuries if bystander CPR was initiated or if someone knew how to “Stop the Bleed”.
As an Emergency Room (ER) nurse for over 20 years, I am passionate about prevention, preparation, and saving lives.
What should our readers know about your business?
At Best Learning Solution, we are a training center that teaches CPR and many more classes where anyone can become certified in various certifications. As doctoral-prepared nurses, we can also develop curriculums and training programs to fit the needs of our customers/clients. We use real-life scenarios and evidence-based information to ensure the training is reputable, effective, and realistic. We have a passion to develop and share our knowledge; we are not here to check a box; we are here to get you ready and have each learner walking away feeling prepared for the next possible emergency.
I am most proud to share my story of where I came from and where I am today. I was a teenage mom; my son was born when I was in 10th grade. I was raised by a single mom, and for part of my life, we lived in government-funded housing. I am excited to touch as many lives as possible! The goal is to grow this company beyond training classes and create mentorship programs and opportunities for others to excel and succeed in life, regardless of their background and early beginnings.
Getting here was not easy, and I did not do it alone. I am where I am today because many people believed in me and gave me opportunities to grow and use my talents. I also received several no’s to job opportunities I applied for. Those were a blow to my ego at times, but they also motivated me to keep pushing. The one lesson I have learned along the way in life and opening this business is to be humble and not be afraid to ask questions and ask for help. You will be surprised at how many people are in your corner, wanting to see you win. At times, you appear to have it all put together, so they don’t know you need help. Don’t assume people know you could use some help. Just ask!
I want the world to know that while we at BLS are not selling fancy merchandise, we are providing a priceless service that everyone needs, but does not realize they need until it is too late. Our vision is to teach every person, every mom, dad, pastor, teacher, daycare worker, grocery store employee, industry worker, trainer, at one of our locations, at your organization, or virtually. Do not hesitate to call us, no session is too big or too small. Now is the time to learn.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first thing I would do is look on Soca Passion’s Facebook page and text all my Caribbean friends in Houston to see where the Caribbean parties are and if there are any Caribbean artists in town. One thing I love about Houston is the diversity and the ability to eat various foods, listen to or dance to Soca and Reggae music, and have a blast amongst my island folks.
After 2 days of recovery and resting by the pool after partying island-style, we will have lunch at Cali Kitchen and Bar. The food there is amazing!
For her last evening, I would take her to my favorite seafood restaurant for some fine dining at Truluck’s.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to give thanks to God. He has definitely blessed me, placed the right people in my path at the right time, and opened and closed many doors to get me where I am today. There are so many people I could pick to dedicate this shoutout to, but without a doubt, I would like to thank and dedicate this to my mom, Patricia Francis. To know her is to love her. She is one of the kindest, smartest, most generous, and most inspiring people I know. Even when I fall, my mom has always been there for me without judgment, and she is my biggest cheerleader. I am glad and I thank God every day she is here to witness her little Toya grow up to do better and bigger things in life. I am truly here on earth to inspire others and make my mother proud.
