We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I decided to start Inner Gleaux Beauty I wanted to find a way to assist women like me who are often overwhelmed and juggling multiple tasks find a way to pour back into themselves and relieve some of their day-to-day stress. I feel that self-love is the key to pivoting your life in the right direction. When you love yourself, you teach others how to love and treat you as well and you do not tolerate things that disrupt that peace and serenity that you have taken the time to build and establish within. It is common knowledge that most women only get time alone when they are showering or bathing, so I wanted to amplify that with products that not only help you relax but also uplift you. Each product is designed to make you not only smell good but feel good physically as well. They all have their own positive words of affirmation to uplift each customer as well as boost their confidence or give them a gentle reminder that all things will work out in their favor especially in those moments when life has gotten overwhelming, or they are over stimulated. I am a huge advocate for mental health and emotional awareness. You must remember that in order for you to be a good vessel for those around you, you first have to be good for and to yourself. Do not pour so much out of you for those around you that you lose yourself and have nothing left for yourself at the end of the day. Take it upon yourself to set healthy boundaries where you are not fully depleted and incorporate people and things in your life that reciprocate some of the energy that you pour out into this world. Lastly, if you feel you have exalted all the options you can think of, know, and understand that it is okay to seek professional help and talk to someone to help get you where you need to be. Most times people do not need therapy for the answers but just to get it out and talk it through with someone that they feel will not judge them. Find you a safe place to lay your burdens down so that your bag is not too heavy for you to carry.
In addition to Inner Gleaux Beauty I have a subsidary called The Breauxs which is for the distinguished gentlemen. I created The Breauxs to serve as a vessle to pour into black men because I feel as though majority of the time they aren’t greeted with love and appreciation publicly. With The Breauxs it is my intention to provide them with great grooming products as well as encouragement from a black woman to let them know that they are loved, they are needed, they are valued, they are appreciated. Over the last few years more than ever we have seen so many of them being gunned down or belittled and I just want them to know that their sisters are proud of them and the growth that they have made; it is not unnoticed. WE SEE YOU!!
My first endeavor was actually a support group called Mothers of Unborn Angels which is for women that have miscarriages, still born or suffer from infertility. I, myself, have had four miscarraiges before having my daughter Khloe so I know and understand first hand how hard and difficult that grieving process is. It never goes away and it is something that will change you forever. I decided to create this group because I didn’t see people that looked like me and in the African American community most people don’t discuss it. I wanted to change that narrative because there are so many people that suffer in silence. I want people not just women but men too to be comfortable with discussing their losses and know that they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings. Theres many of us out here that can relate to your pain unfortunately but fortunately you do not have to go through it alone.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I love creating my own skincare products. I get a rush and thrill when I create a new one and see how much people like it or how good it may make the skin feel. Formulating my own products is my serenity and peace. I feel so at ease when I am in my office with the music playing and testing out new formulas. Being that I have sensitive skin it is very imperative for me to be open and honest about my products and ingredients because I know how easy the simpliest thing can altar your skin or cause a breakout. Trial and error contributed to where I am today as well as determination. Being an entreprenuer is in no way easy but the day to day hustle and grind makes it all worth it. When I have customers tell me how my products that I made with my own two hands cleared their skin or makes their skin feel so soft and smell amazing; it makes those long nights and early mornings worth it. I have lost family and so-called friends due to my business but the way I see it what God has for me is for me and nothing or no one can stand in the way of that. If someone has a problem with you following your dream and you are being true to yourself then that is their problem and it is none of your concern. Keep your eyes on the prize and continue to live out your dream. I want people to look at Inner Gleaux Beauty and see it as a representation for the woman that kept going even when it was easier to walk away and give up. This is for those that conquer their own inner demons to be their best selves. This is for those women like me that juggle wearing multiple hats and still manage to pour into others. This is for the women like myself that appreciates sisterhood and unity and being a beem of light in a world of so much darkness. You can accomplish anything or be anyone that you truly set your mind to. It all starts in your mind and flows from your heart; the more you let Geaux the more you will Gleaux.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m mostly a home-body these days but I would probably take them to Faces or 5015 off almeda to have a night out. To eat I would probably go to Kiss, Lost and Found or The Oceanaire Seafood Room to just name a few.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother Linda Brown has always been that light in my darkest moments. She has always encouraged me to keep going in everything and to never give up on my dreams or goals. I watched her strive and accomplish so much growing up and even more so now as an adult. I have a greater appreciation for her dedication and resilience and I attempt to model myself in the footsteps that she has tracked within my day to day life. I’ve never even seen her let things get her down; she just always figures it out. I can honestly say when faced with multiple trials and tribulations when you approach them with the thought process of I don’t know how it’s going to work out but i know it will the less you will stress and panick. You do all that you can and allow God to provide the rest.
