We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My first business was never intended to be a business; it was a support group for women that have suffered the loss of a child from miscarriage, SIDS and or still birth called Mothers of Unborn Angels. Once I began the group on social media different women began asking for different quotes I had so I began putting them on shirts and created different memorabilia items for them to remember their children by. With Indigeaux Beauty, I wanted a way to pour into women the importance of self-love, healing and inner beauty. As most women, when we look good we feel good so I figured I could use that to get my message across. True beauty lies within and is projected outwardly. So although I provide makeup I also provide homemade skin care to assist with problematic skin or to maintain healthy skin as well as motivational quotes to inspire and promote healing.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Indigeaux Beauty is a cosmetic line that sole purpose is self-love, healing, inner peace and growing. We have high quality make-up that is highly pigmented but will not break the bank. We also provide our customers with homemade skin care products with ingredients that they are familiar with and can pronounce. What sets us apart from other brands is our attention to mental, emotional and spiritual awareness. It is our goal to uplift, encourage and inspire all of our customers to be their authentic true selves without shame. We want them to be proud of who they are when they look in the mirror and not just physically and if they are not we will like to help them get to a place where they can be. When our customers write me and say that my quote or post encouraged or inspired them my day is made and I am full of joy. This journey has not been easy but I wouldn’t change it for anything. It has taught me so much about myself and I have truly grown as a person and a business owner. In the beginning thing’s were slow but I continued to post anyway and eventually enough people began to provide feedback on the products and we began to pick up traction, sales and followers. I have learned that you should always have a plan and back up for each plan so that if something doesn’t work you can go to the next plan until you find what works for you and your brand. There has already been times investors have contacted me and I have turned them down because they don’t see the vision I see for Indigeaux Beauty and I am not going to waiver on what Indigeaux Beauty represents and stand for. I want everyone to know that Indigeaux Beauty is a brand that is deeply rooted in self love and self-care because the owner knows all too well how hard it can be to not have those tools; you are loved and you are beautiful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a good brunch I would take them to Lost and Found to enjoy the food and music on the patio. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother Linda Brown has always been the fire behind my efforts. I watched my mother work multiple jobs and earn her two Bachelor Degrees from Grambling while taking care of me and my brother on her own. She never complained or gave up; she always made it happen. With every dream, thought or business venture I have; I tell her first. She always uplifts and encourages me no matter what it is that I want to pursue. She always lets me know I can do any and everything I put my mind and full effort to. If it was not for her resilience I wouldn’t have the fight and drive in me to continue pushing forward to see all of my dreams become a reality.
