We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony D. Kimbrough and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ebony D., what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Consistency and not allowing the opinions and failures of others to shift me

What should our readers know about your business?
EK Professionals Permanent Cosmetics & Tattoo Institute was founded from a place of wanting better and despair. I was a felon (I didn’t kill nobody y’all … I put a stop payment on a rent check) and it was extremely difficult for me to find a job that aligned with the lifestyle I wanted.

I did find a job eventually at a locally family owned business in my city. I was super excited bc they were paying me $26 dollars an hour.. Literally the most money I’ve ever know anyone to make around me. I was grateful for the job but once I got there it was draining… I looked around and seen all the older ladies in their cubicles just doing their day to day routine seeming content. One day I asked them if they ever wanted to do anything else and their eyes lite up as they told me yes and described what their heart truly desired. I asked them how long had they been here.. some replied 15 years, 20 years, another lady said she had been with the company since they opened 32 years ago. I got so sad

Few weeks later I came in the office and noticed the owner and his wife which was our supervisor weren’t in. I asked where they were and one of the ladies replied to me.. oh they take their family on a European tour every year for 6 weeks. I don’t know why but that sparked something in me. I started adding my checks up and counting my family members and quickly seen that the money I was making was never gonna allow me to take my family in a European tour.. it never was gonna allow me to have financial freedom. I called my husband that day and told him I was putting in my two weeks notice and pursue my career in PMU.. he was like wait wife ok I get what you are saying but you just got this job. Lol I wasn’t trying to hear that… at all I knew inside of me what I felt and I had to do it.. and I did!!! Here we are 8 years later I own several successful businesses. It wasn’t easy at all not even a little bit bit it has damn sure been worth it

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m known for my food reviews in my city. I’m such a foodie. Like food is life it speaks to my soul.

So if a friend was coming in town. I’m gonna cook for them a couple days out of the week while they are here.

I’ll then take them to my favorite chicken spot Kools BBQ & Catering (omg if y’all are ever here I gotta take y’all listennnnn the chicken is like some chicken from Old McDonalds farm that said cluck cluck cluck … it’s fye)

We would watch movies, shop a little, and go eat some more. I don’t drink so I would probably take them somewhere typical if they are looking for drinks bc that ain’t my area

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband. He is such a silent man but his wisdom and supports carries a thunderous roar. Any wild ideas I have he helps me streamline it into a business. He gets the logistics side together and I operate and will be the face of the business. He is brilliant in business structure and logistical ideas… and he is really handsome!
