Meet Ella Mcgill | Professional Wig Maker & Wig Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ella Mcgill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ella, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
To be honest, I started my business by accident. Originally, it was just a hobby—something I did as a creative outlet while working as a school counselor. At the time, I had transitioned from relaxed to natural hair and used wigs to boost my confidence during the process. My initial plan was to be a YouTuber, reviewing hair for companies and sharing my passion for hair with the world.
As I documented my wig journey on social media, people started requesting custom wigs. After receiving multiple requests and doing some research, I realized the demand was there. That’s when I decided to take it seriously and officially launched Issentials. What started as a personal passion quickly evolved into a thriving business dedicated to helping women feel confident and beautiful.
After three successful years in business, I took a leap of faith and went full-time. It was the best decision I made in my 20s. Now, I not only create high-quality wigs but also teach others the art of wig making, empowering aspiring entrepreneurs to build their own businesses. My background in education and counseling allows me to connect with my students and clients on a deeper level, making the learning experience both impactful and inspiring. Seeing the confidence and independence that wigs bring to my clients—and the skills I pass on to my students—reminds me every day that I’m walking in my purpose.

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets me apart in my business is my background in education, counseling, and hair. These experiences have shaped me into a powerful wig business owner because they allow me to connect with people on different levels. I understand the confidence and empowerment that wigs can bring, and I use my skills to help others feel beautiful and build their own businesses. Issentials is more than just a wig brand—it’s about impact, transformation, and empowerment.
I am most proud of the impact I have been able to make in countless lives. I truly feel like I found my purpose, and that excites me! I literally get to be a light in the world, and I love that for me. I love showing up as my authentic self and helping change lives. I feel like sharing my journey and being true to myself has gotten me where I am today. Being goal-oriented and having a clear vision of the life I desire has also played a huge role in my success.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that your gifts and talents will always make room for you. If you have faith and courage, the sky is the limit. I’ve also learned to trust my inner voice—it will always guide you in the right direction.
I want the world to know that you can pivot at any time. You get to decide the life you want to live. From the beginning of my career, I’ve never been afraid to shift when I felt like I had outgrown my current reality. Even within my business, I’ve pivoted many times and done it with grace. It’s not always easy, but with God, faith, and action, you can turn your dreams into reality.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend was visiting for a week, we’d have the best time! First stop? The spa, because I love a good spa day. My favorite right now is Spa World in the Houston/Katy area—it’s the perfect way to kick off the trip and relax. After that, we’d eat good all week, hitting up my favorite spots like Grace’s, Pappadeaux, Perry’s, Saltgrass, Mia’s, and First Watch for breakfast. We’d also have to catch a vibe in 3rd Ward on Emancipation, where Black excellence is always on full display, and the energy is unmatched—good hood jam type of vibe! Shopping is a must, so we’d hit The Galleria and stop by my favorite store, Saks 5th, for a luxury shopping experience. Depending on the season, we’d find the latest entertainment—because one thing about Houston, there’s always something to do! Whether it’s concerts, putt-putt, bowling, comedy shows, the rodeo, or water parks, we’d stay busy and have a time. My friend would definitely leave Houston already planning their next trip back!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to shout out my incredible support system—my husband, parents, siblings, family, friends, and my amazing Issentials’ community. Their love, encouragement, and belief in my vision have played a huge role in my success. From uplifting me during tough times to celebrating every milestone, they’ve been there every step of the way. I’m incredibly grateful for the people who continue to support my business, whether by cheering me on, sharing my work, or trusting me to provide quality wigs and education. Issentials wouldn’t be what it is today without the unwavering support of my community!
