We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellie Iglesias and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ellie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I love this question, because when i decided to work for myself, i didnt realize the importance and impact COMMUNITY would have on my success. So although I am an independent artist, and I work for myself, the most important decision i could have made was to continue to network and befriend people in my field. I have had so many beautiful opportunities thanks to the people around me, and i wouldnt be who i am or have the success i have without those special connections.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a tattoo artist who specializes in fine-line, black and grey tattoos. Proudly, i can say that me and my clients almost always form a bond that turns into a friendship, and this makes me so happy because my main goal through all this was to be able to offer an experience where my client always feels welcome and at home! The path to becoming the artist and business owner wasnt easy but it wasnt hard either. Like in any workplace, hardships and laboral frustrations exist but nothing could ever replace the JOY of creating art with my clients. When i go into the studio and my client walks in, any problems i have are washed away. The biggest lesson i learned along the way was to listen to our elders. as a young new person in the industry, we let our ego’s get in the way and our journey suffers. Time and time again, i have found that the things my mentors told me was for a reason. I’d love the world to know that if you have passion and a desire for a craft, you are doing yourself a disservice not acting upon it. Tattooing has been the most beautiful experience life has gifted me, its brought me friends, community, a healthy income and most of all, purpose. I implore everyone to take time to do something you love, and do it fiercely, no matter what anyone thinks or says.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am based in Houston TX, home of the best food! So if i were to have a friend visit me I would take them all around houston and its surrounding areas. Downtown for food and drinks at the underground hall, and a night time stroll at discovery green park. Next we can take a couple days to go to the museum district and enjoy the fine arts, science museum, aquarium or zoo! My favorite park to visit is the Eleanor Tinsley park at the buffalo bayou, it has a gorgeous view of the skyline that you cant beat.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My work partner, and best friend, Andrea Sanchez. Her instagram is positively.energized.tattoos.
