We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Rust and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
By definition, balance is: 1. an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady 2. a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions. Balance has been one of the absolute hardest things for me to focus on while owning a business and it is something that I am still working on daily. There are many pieces of the pie and not all pieces are equal in size. I am always being pulled in different directions with specific things demanding more focus than others. It is very easy for me to get lost in my work with early mornings and late nights because I am naturally drawn to a routine which caused a breakdown in my ability to remain upright and steady. There is nothing wrong with early mornings and late nights because after all, that is entrepreneurship! However, the question that I am currently choosing to ask myself is ‘what is sustainable’? From the outside, I don’t think the “breakdown” is ever as obvious as it is to the people closest to you. The biggest challenge I faced was being able to recognize and accept what the people closest to me saw, and how my schedule was truly affecting me mentally and emotionally. I am strong, I don’t give up, and I can accomplish a lot each day. This battle with perfectionism is a slippery slope that caused an internal battle within my spirit and mind. Over time, I began to learn the importance of being still, sitting with myself, and allowing myself to think without any outside influence. I began to see the areas of my life that were lacking and started to give myself more grace in those areas. This enabled me to make a positive change versus self-sabotage, and I am continuously working to live a life that is in the correct proportions. To me, balance is something I must make a point to focus on daily because no two days are ever the same. To have balance, I must make a conscious decision each and every day to live the life I want to live.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
If I could say one thing to the world about our business, it is that we will out work everyone else! We work day in and day out with our team to make sure that each and every customer has the best possible experience they can have with our agency. If something is not right, we fix it. If we have a customer that is not happy, we do whatever we can to rectify the situation. Our business will never remain stagnant as the world and insurance industry is ever changing. Helix Insurance Group focuses on minimizing the education gap that most of our customers have experienced with prior agents . We are not in the business of selling an insurance policy on price alone. Instead, we strive to educate our customers and ensure that they are getting quality information to make an informed decision regarding their insurance. Our goal is growth, and our focus is on creating lasting relationships built around our Core Values; integrity, commitment, consistency, family.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live on Tiki Island with my husband, Adam, and rarely want to leave because the water is my happy place. When my best friends visit we put down our phones and we go out on the boat. We swim in our canal, spend time roasting in the sun, go to the sand bar, or we head out to deep sea fish (fresh ceviche is THE BEST)! I love taking our boat to Number 13, which is my favorite restaurant and Galveston offers a lot of great places to eat such as; Katie’s Seafood, San Luis Steakhouse and Yamato. Can you tell I like food?! If you like to live in cut offs and flip flops, drink some tasty wine, laugh a lot while meeting our amazing friends/neighbors, and enjoy the good life then Tiki is the place for you!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband and business partner, Adam, deserves the love and recognition in my life. He believes in me when I don’t believe in myself and he supports me no matter what. Adam is my rock and I am so thankful God brought him in to my life. Secondly, I could not ask for a better team. They work day in and day out for our customers. Without them, none of it would be possible because it truly is a TEAM EFFORT!
