Meet Emily Vilchis | Cookier / Cookie Decorator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Vilchis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Ever since I became a mom it was very hard for me to be at work and have to miss out on some major milestones with my daughter. I took the tough decision to quit and become a stay at home mom. I still wanted to work and find something that would work for us at home and that’s when I started to learn how to bake and decorate sugar cookies. I saw this as an opportunity where I could still be home and take care of my daughter but also make some extra money.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am very proud at how advanced my skill level has improved over time especially because I am self taught. I learned everything through watching videos mainly on Instagram. It wasn’t easy at first but with practice and patience I learned new techniques. I really enjoy decorating cookies It’s my way of expressing my creativity and I’m also glad I can do this with my daughter, who always loves to help! As much as I enjoy doing this from home, it is hard sometimes to manage my time. I try to limit my working hours at home but I also sometimes procrastinate and spend all nighters finishing orders. I’ve gotten into a daily routine that has helped me so much!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was in town, I’d love to go out to Minute maid park and go to an Astros game and then enjoy some Pizza from Frank’s Pizza! Grab some drinks at the nearest bar and just enjoy some good food, music and pizza.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout out to my biggest supporter, my husband Johnny! Without his support I would have never been able to pursue this hobby that turned into a small business. I am grateful for all of his help and encouraging words that get me through my stressful days.
