We had the good fortune of connecting with Esa Mohamed and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Esa, why did you pursue a creative career?
I didn’t pursue an artistic career, it pursued me. All my life I’ve looked at things differently and always felt creative. At the age of 17 as I was finishing high school and trying to figure out what I want to do with my life, I realized the one thing that give me true purpose is music. Whether I was happy or sad, broke or with money, music has always been the consistent factor in my life. When I’m away from creating (whether it’s writing lyrics or creating music videos) too long I feel like something is missing. Life is art. Art is more than just music, drawing, photography etc… we are all artists you just have to find what kind of art you want to create.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a reflection of me and everything I am. What sets me is the fact that I create what’s true to me. I don’t try to follow trends or do what’s “hot”. I want to be timeless I want to create music that will be remembered for its honesty. I want my music to heal people or at least uplift you and leave you in a better place than before you clicked the play button.

What I’m most proud of is my growth. I’ve came a long way from when I started. No flow just passionately yelling into a mic. Now my versatility puts me in a class of my own. I don’t just create songs I create projects. Experiences if I may say. Listen to my ep “Don’t need wings to fly”. A song like “ Search & Destroy” can give you aggressive bars that set your mind on fire or you can listen to “Tale of my Revenge” which is like laying on a hammock on a beach enjoying life.

I’ve learned a lot along the way. I basically document it all in my music. I’ve put out two 9 song projects in the last 6 months. The first being “Empowerment Theory” which in its name is meant to empower you. Everything from financial literacy to giving you the courage to chase the dream the world tells you is to big to achieve.

The most recent project is called “SZNL Book II: Healing”. Just like it’s name it’s meant to help you heal. Self reflection is the tool that can help people really become the person they wish to be. You must master yourself before you can master the world.

Esa Mighty is more than just a name that sounds cool. Mighty is a reminder to always become better and always be better because you are better than what the world tells you. So be Mighty.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The one thing I’ll say is if you come to town you have options to the best food in the country. Dearborn is a hidden treasure I’d say. I’d first take you to Sheba restaurant. Best Mediterranean food you’ll ever have. We got burger joints like good burger taystees or my favorite burger truck the spot.

Not much sight seeing but downtown Detroit is a beauty in its own. We’re called the motor city so be prepared to see a lot of amazing cars.

Other than that I don’t really go out much I’m a home body I’m either home if I leave it’s either to hit the gym or because there’s money waiting for me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To be honest there’s too many people to thank. First I have to shoutout god who gave me this ability and this mind. Sometimes it’s a blessing and a curse but he also gave me the understanding to use it wisely.

Then I’d have to shoutout my family who have supported me even when they didn’t agree with me 100%.

My creative team: shoutout Anton my engineer. My visual squad Bubs, Dylan, and Tank. My producer: Hugo

Also have to shoutout my friends who are basically brothers and fellow self-employed entrepreneurs: Mohammed, Anwar, Ali. They remind me to stay patient during low points as well as celebrate me during success. True friends are hard to come by so I’m always thankful for them.

Last shoutout I’d have to give is the southend of Dearborn, Mi, my home town. We’ve always been the underdogs. A community of predominantly Yemeni-Americans I want to show my people that humble beginnings is a strength, it’s not about where you start but where you finish.
