We had the good fortune of connecting with Evelyn Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evelyn, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue a creative career because bringing my visions to life through photography is a magical feeling that a 9-5 job couldn’t give me. I love the process that goes into planning and executing my ideas, even if the process takes months to complete. Seeing the final gallery and knowing I did that is a feeling that I will never not crave.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It wasn’t easy to get to where I am today in my photography career. As a creative, there will always be competition and self-doubt. We are our own worst critic but in these times, it’s important to remember why you started and the growth you’ve achieved already. Always believe in yourself and in your art, even when you don’t think it deserves it. That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned-and am still learning.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When visiting Houston, exploring The Museum District is a must! The Museum of Fine Arts would definitely be on the schedule as well as Hermann Park! Although both spots are often crowded, they’re both very beautiful and very fun. Sig’s Lagoon Record Shop is also a must. It’s a two story shop filled with vintage-feeling decor and different records ranging from Queen all the way to Harry Styles.
To grab a quick bite to eat, Tacos-A-Go-Go is located right across the street! Their breakfast tacos are so tasty but their Mexican Street Tacos take first place.
Lastly, visiting Montrose would definitely be on the schedule too! Stores such as Pavement, Leopard Lounge, and the beautiful pink gradient mural on the side of Emerson Rose make for great photo ops!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to everyone who believed in my art, even when it wasn’t always the best- Mom, Dad, Kevin, Sara, & everyone else who encouraged me to keep going.
