We had the good fortune of connecting with Farrari Guillory and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Farrari, what role has risk played in your life or career?
In my opinion, risk is necessary and goes hand in hand with faith. Let me be clear when I say risk; I’m talking in the context of chasing dreams and passions, career changes, things that make you happy, etc. The worst thing that can happen when taking a risk is that you fail. Failure isn’t necessarily bad; it allows you to see where you messed up and create a new action plan. I pray, trust God, make a plan, and go. Taking a risk allowed me to move forward with Her Eyes Her Lens.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So, my photography “Her Eyes Her Lens” is my baby. It started out as an outlet, then turned into something that I was able to profit from. Besides allowing people to book me for photoshoots, I sell prints of photos that I’ve taken on trips. I am most proud of how I’m allowing myself to be more open in terms of the type of photoshoots that I book. I tried something new this year, and I started working with brands. A few of my friends started businesses and hired me as their photographer!
Getting here was not easy, and I was nervous because I don’t have a huge following and I’m sensitive about my work. I mentioned earlier that photography is an outlet for me, and I want to keep that. I don’t ever again want to lose the excitement I feel when I take photos. If something doesn’t feel right, I won’t take the job. To overcome challenges, I stay true to who I am. I feel like I’ll cross paths with people that I’m meant to work with when it’s time.
A big lesson that I’ve learned is that it’s okay to say no. At one point I lost my excitement with photography because I stopped using it as an outlet and got caught up in the booking shoots for people. Now I love working with people, but sometimes it becomes draining. I had to remind myself why I fell in love with it and figure out how to have fun with photoshoots all over again.
What do I want the world to know about me?? Oh Gosh, Umm I guess I want people to know that I really do love capturing organic moments, Whether I’m booked for a photoshoot or I’m exploring a city, I look for genuine moments. Those moments are the best photos.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whew, I had to think about this. Honestly, I would use the Instagram account @Houbucketlist to plan the week. A few spots we’d eat at are Turkey Leg Hut, Taste Bar, and Lost and Found. We’d definitely hit up one of those pop-up art galleries like PlayHaus or Color Factory, and I’d get some of the homies together and book a private room at a karaoke bar. We’d probably do a girl’s day at the Marquis Marriott (the pool area is a vibe). I’m a real homebody, but I’ll step out when my friends come into town.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people that helped me get to this point. My best friend Sacharae (God rest her soul) has told me from the jump that I needed to do more with my photography. We always created magic with our photoshoots. My friends Willie and Darian get me, they’re creative individuals as well, and they both have helped me bring certain visions to life. My MOM has been behind me 100% and encourages me to keep going, especially when I want to give up. Anyone who has purchased a gallery frame, canvas print, merch. or booked a photoshoot with me; I appreciate you. The people that rock with me, support me, and continue to encourage me, I love yall!
