We had the good fortune of connecting with Genevieve Marcel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Genevieve, every day, we know how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I decided to return to school to complete a masters degree in clinical psychology, I knew that I wanted my private practice to focus on relationship & sex therapy. I understand that many people we talk to about sexual trauma, intimacy concerns or just life only feel comfortable in that conversation to a point. And that point is reached pretty quickly. Once one crosses the threshold of details of the lived experience, it can get convoluted. Some people in our support system exit stage left either physically or emotionally. Not because they do not care, but because it may be too difficult of a conversation for them to have.

That leaves a void for sexual trauma survivors & people facing intimacy concerns that seek individual therapy or sex therapy (talk therapy). I wanted to fill that void the best way that I could. Hence, I created Liaison for sex therapy, relationship therapy, sexual trauma therapy & personal development.

What should our readers know about your business?
Liaison. was established as an existential sex therapy practice that empowers clients to engage authentically within themselves and with others. The practice operates on a foundation of Existential psychology, which is different from most therapy practices in the US. Existential psychotherapy prioritizes embracing each individual’s authenticity in their way of being rather than diminishing each person or changing them to fit the status quo. We often have experiences that cause us to evaluate the differential between who we are on the surface and who we are authentically. The meaning of our lives is what we create it to be. Since we create our life’s meaning, that freedom and corresponding responsibility can create an existential crisis. It’s like having so many options on the menu that making a decision is stressful. Except the items on the menu are components & decisions of your life.

For many of us, the difficulty is that more often than not, our purpose becomes designed by others (parents, societal expectation, financial need) and who we really are is often beaten into submission. Needless to say, that can create existential anxiety coupled with internal, subdued resentment. That alone can create relationship issues and frustration. If you layer that with emotional or sexual trauma, life just got more complicated. With the Liaison. approach, we look deeper to understand who you really are and work within that frame.

The road to establish Liaison. was not an easy one, however it has proven worthwhile at every step. Knowing that Liaison. is helping people view themselves as they are or desire to be vs how society tells them to exist is immensely powerful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If they have a love of art, I would immediately direct them to the Menil & Rothko Chapel. Entrance is free. Rothko Chapel can be a transcendent and meditative experience if you allow it to be. Houston is best known for its diversity with food options. For fine dining, places such as March and Le Jardinier are always divine. Houston staples such as Hugo’s, Da Gama, Uchiko and Traveler’s Table should definitely make the rotation as they are not only wonderful, but they have vegan options that will make you come back for more.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband and daughter as they have been on this road with me since its inception. When your wife or mother says that they want to become a sex therapist, many people may think of all of stereotypical concerns. However, my daughter and husband understood that I wanted to be a champion for those that have experienced sexual trauma and emotional disruptions that have hindered their overall well-being. They have been my unwavering support through it all and I will forever be grateful.
