We had the good fortune of connecting with Gercell James and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gercell, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I embarked on the journey of entrepreneurship with the launch of Sashes & Garments T-shirt and Apparel Company in 2017, aiming to empower women through simple and empowering sayings on small articles. The motto ‘Own your Journey, Wear Your Truth’ encapsulates our mission. Recently, I ventured into Interior Design and Professional Organizing, driven by the desire to assist busy individuals in harmonizing their lives for seamless functionality, without disrupting their hectic schedules.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart is simply being myself. I don’t compare; my clients get not just my skills but my personality. With a background in service-based roles, I go the extra mile without compromising quality. I take pride in educating myself, not only in establishing my LLCs but also by seeking courses and attending the University of YouTube and Google University to self-teach whatever I needed to learn. Additionally, my cousin Kerry Ann played a crucial role in guiding me through the creative process of learning design software. The journey wasn’t easy, but through education, consistency, determination, and the support of loved ones, I overcame challenges, especially during the pandemic. I got creative with ‘Sip-n-Tee’s,’ offering unique experiences. Beyond that, I want the world to know that I find joy in what I do, and my commitment goes beyond the ordinary. I thrive on embracing new challenges and opportunities, constantly seeking innovative ways to bring my passion for design and organization to life. My journey is a testament to the belief that creativity knows no bounds, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to David Shands, whose inspiring words on a local gospel radio station sparked the idea of pursuing a t-shirt brand and achieving six figures. His encouragement, along with the support of my husband and military brother/friend, played a pivotal role in taking that leap. Additionally, for my Interior Design/Professional Organizing venture, heartfelt thanks to my accountability partner, supportive friends, and loving family. Their unwavering encouragement and assistance have been instrumental in my entrepreneurial journey.
