We had the good fortune of connecting with Haley Easy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Haley, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing many people don’t realize about the baking industry—especially when it comes to custom cakes—is how much time and effort goes into bringing these creations to life. It’s not just about mixing batter and frosting; a lot of work happens behind the scenes.
For example, when someone requests an extravagant custom cake for a milestone birthday or a big event, it’s not something we can whip up overnight. These cakes often require detailed planning and design. Sometimes we even sketch out the vision to make sure it aligns with the customer’s expectations. Then there’s the time spent researching and ordering custom toppers or other decorations, which can take up to two weeks to arrive.
On top of that, many custom cakes are like construction projects—literally. They might need wood bases, support rods, or other structural elements to ensure the design is not only stunning but also stable. And all of this happens while we’re balancing regular orders and managing a busy schedule.
As bakers, we do our best to educate customers about the time and preparation these orders require. I wish more people understood the value of giving us ample notice. With enough time, we can make their dream cake a reality, but it’s definitely a process that can’t be rushed.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is more than just baking—it’s creating edible memories. At Eazy As Pie, I specialize in unique and decadent treats like cake cups, thick cookies, and custom cakes that stand out because of their creativity, flavor, and attention to detail. What sets me apart is my ability to merge bold, artistic designs with irresistible flavors. I don’t just want my desserts to look amazing; I want them to be an unforgettable experience from the first bite to the last.
What I’m most proud of is seeing the joy on my customers’ faces when they see their orders. Whether it’s an intricate custom cake or a comforting cookie, knowing I’ve brought someone’s vision to life or made their day a little sweeter is incredibly rewarding.
Getting to where I am today professionally hasn’t been easy. Transitioning from traditional cakes to custom designs was a huge challenge. I had to teach myself new techniques, figure out how to handle new materials like fondant, and manage the complexity of balancing creativity with functionality. There were moments of doubt, especially early on, when I didn’t know if I was capable of pulling off some of the extravagant designs customers requested. But I pushed through by staying curious, asking for help when needed, and always learning from my mistakes.
The biggest lessons I’ve learned are patience and perseverance. Great things take time, whether it’s perfecting a new skill or building a loyal customer base. I’ve also learned the importance of staying true to my vision, even when things get tough.
What I want the world to know about Eazy As Pie is that it’s more than a baking business—it’s a reflection of my passion and love for creating something special for every customer. My journey has been fueled by creativity, resilience, and the unwavering support of those around me. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited to keep pushing boundaries and delivering treats that make people smile.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Out of this wonderful life I’ve had so far, I’ve learned to appreciate experiences that feed the soul and create lasting memories. If my best friend were visiting, I’d plan a week filled with Houston’s finest gems.
First, we’d hit up some of Houston’s amazing poetry spots. The artists here have such a powerful way of speaking life into others with every word they share—it’s truly inspiring. Watching them perform would be a perfect way to set the tone for the trip.
For food, we’d dive into Houston’s unbeatable Mexican cuisine. The city has some of the best authentic Mexican food, and I’d take them to one of my favorite spots for tacos, or some mouthwatering birria.
I’d also take them to one of my favorite sushi spots for a change of pace, followed by a cozy lounge where we could relax listen to the music scene, talk, and soak in the vibe. Sometimes, those chill nights with great conversation are the best moments.
During the day, we’d explore the city’s cultural highlights—maybe check out the Houston Museum District or take a stroll through the vibrant street art in EaDo.
To round it out, we’d head to Bellaire’s Chinatown, which is a foodie’s paradise. From steaming bowls of pho to authentic dim sum and bubble tea, there’s so much to explore. The flavors and variety in Bellaire are unmatched, and it’s a perfect way to experience a different side of Houston’s diverse culinary scene.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a huge shoutout to my sister, Kaylyn she’s been my rock, especially during the transition from making regular cakes to creating custom designs. When I first started working with fondant—a material I’d never touched before—she jumped in to help. Whether it was making custom toppers or helping me assemble intricate cakes, she was always by my side, making the process so much easier.
But her impact goes beyond just cake. Kaylyn has been a constant source of encouragement throughout my life. She’s the one person I can truly open up to, who accepts me wholeheartedly and cheers me on no matter what. Even though she’s not my biological sister, she’s family in every sense of the word. You know what they say—sometimes the family you choose is stronger than blood. She’s been by my side since I was 8 years old, so she’s stuck with me for life!
Kaylyn has also been a huge support in my vending journey. She’s always willing to lend a hand, from brainstorming ideas to tackling my craziest projects. Even now, she continues to help whenever I need her. I am so grateful for everything she’s done and continues to do.
