We had the good fortune of connecting with Hank Schyma and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hank, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
There is no shortage of anger these days. I try to give my audience a break from all that by carrying them to someplace beautiful. Even in the horrible aftermath of a violent tornado you can find beauty in the community coming together and helping one another.

Perhaps an evolutionary flaw, humans are hard wired to make emotional decisions and the current algorithms gorge on this. We faithfully triple down on our elitism and fear rather than attempt to ferret out our natural tribal biases. The net result is the declining empathy and growing division we all see. The only armor we have against these dark ages is compassion, empathy, critical thinking and scientific methodology. You deny science, you deny our future. I try to find fun ways to familiarize my audience with the tools of science and compassion wherever I can.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In my teens I struggled with song writing because I was largely trying to write something I thought people would like. It wasn’t until I tuned out the masses and started writing for myself as if I was the last person on Earth that I had my breakthrough in creativity. I think doing what comes natural to you is likely going to deliver the best results. For better or worse, I guess what sets me apart from other content creators is I walk my own path rather than cater to the spammy trends.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you come to Houston, we’re gonna eat. For breakfast you gotta have the Bahn mis at Nam Eatery in the Heights. Don’t forgot the runny egg on the sandwich and the Vietnamese drip coffee. We can walk it off on 19th street shopping for antiques and vintage clothes. For your second cup of coffee, throw a dart. Coffee here is great just about everywhere. For dinner, You gotta have TexMex and my favorite is La Tapatia on Richmond. I’m ordering the street tacos with a side of mole and a grilled jalapeño. We can walk that meal off at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and then hit up live music at the revamped Dan Electros back in the Heights. We’ll likely get lost on the Brazos Bend State Park trails for a couple days watching baby alligators climb all over their mommas. That never gets old.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s a cliche line, but so, so true. My job would be very difficult without fans, followers and Patrons. I’m so grateful for every single one of them.
