We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Herpin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, what role has risk played in your life or career?
If anything comes up in my life or in my business that scares me a little bit that’s when I know I have to do it. You’ll never grow as a person or a business owner without pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone and that can’t happen without taking some risks. As a creative entrepreneur, I need to constantly address where I’m feeling too comfortable. Sometimes that means I’ve worked out a system that is running perfectly and I shouldn’t mess with it but sometimes it means that that’s the exact area I’ve been neglecting. By focusing on that area and making tweaks I’ve seen huge steps taken in my business.
Even if the risk doesn’t exactly pay off how I thought it would there were valuable lessons that got me to that conclusion.
Whether it’s trying out a new photography technique, or traveling to an exciting new location; all of my growth has been run on risking new things and seeing how they turn out.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My wedding photography style can be boiled down to one clear word. Classic. These images are classic. They will never go out of style. It was hard to figure out how to pick a lane that was unique to myself and also served my clients in the absolute best way, but after many years and trial and error, I finally found a groove that makes everyone happy.
It happened by giving in to my organized side. As an artist, I needed the space to be able to observe and create on the day and I gave myself that by having lots of prep with my couples beforehand. We work hard together to make all the decisions and work out all the kinks before so on the day I can focus on the moments and the light instead of coming up with a family list on the spot.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would just live in the museum district. I make a whole day out of visiting all of my favorite art museums in the city every couple of years or so to kick-start some inspiration or to treat myself. And I can’t ever refuse a breakfast date at Baby Barnaby’s.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to make a shoutout to a couple of mentors I’ve had along the way that pushed me in the right direction. Mark Eric took me under his wing when I was first starting out and I wouldn’t be where I am without that support in the very beginning. I did a mentorship with Kristin Sweeting in Paris at a pivotal time in my business and that experience really helped me step up a notch.
