We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Killebrew and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, what do you attribute your success to?
My business really took off when I started networking with other businesses in the industry. I was always afraid of being judged because I hadn’t been in the industry as long as most of the other photographers, but that was not the case at all. I have grown so much since building relationships with other business owners in my area. Most people don’t prefer to engage with others in their industry because they fear the competition, but I don’t because I have seen what it has done for my own business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most proud of my business structure. I am a natural of all things organization and planning, which is a huge plus in running a business. Every booking, delivery, and client process that I have implemented has always allowed me to advance my client’s experience. The most recent project that I have implemented for my clients is my wedding guide for my brides. I have a book that I created from scratch and send to my brides after booking with all the wedding photography details, tips, and tricks inside. Additionally, I have expanded the book to also add other wedding-planning tips and things to think about.
I got to where I am today by never giving up. For the first few years of my business I never really felt like it would turn into anything like it has today. Once I really got serious about my business structure, I went full force into planning my processes and that was a huge turning point. My business turned into something I thought about all day every day, and still is today.
I’ve learned more lessons along the way than I can name, but the biggest one is to never let anyone’s opinions affect what you do in your business. It can be hard to not do what everyone else is doing, especially if they are more successful than you. At the end of the day, what works for them may not work for you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would encourage them to visit Houston the first week in March. This is when the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is just getting started. A month full of food, fun, and making memories. Not to mention you can shop, eat, attend a carnival, watch a rodeo and a concert all in the same place. It is an experience like no other. I have been a volunteer for the organization for six years now and I always enjoy that time of year. My favorite food on the grounds is the Wonton Nachos or the Go Tejano Tacos, but you can never go wrong with fried Oreos or a funnel cake. The best drinks are in the 100’s section in the Chute Club. A fun atmosphere with room to hang out both indoors and on the balcony. Not to mention HLSR’s mission is to provide scholarships for high school and college students so that they can further their education.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my fellow photographer friends. Without each and every one of them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Having their support and being able to lean on each one of them when I have questions or theres a booking that I am unable to accept, is so important in my business. Those go-to people are the ones you’ll never forget!
