We had the good fortune of connecting with Hashem Al-ghaili and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hashem, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My business started as a passion project back in 2008. I was driven to share evidence-based content about science, technology, health, and medicine—topics I cared about deeply. At the time, I didn’t see it as a business; I just wanted to provide my audience with reliable, well-cited information. As my social media channels grew, I realized there was an opportunity to turn that passion into a sustainable business. So, in a way, my business naturally evolved from something I loved doing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work revolves around storytelling through science, technology, and filmmaking. I combine my background in molecular biology with my passion for creative visuals to produce engaging content that simplifies complex topics. Whether it’s through videos, sci-fi films, or science-based futuristic concepts like EctoLife, BrainBridge and Cognify, I aim to inspire curiosity and spark meaningful conversations.
What sets my work apart is the mix of scientific accuracy with visually striking, imaginative ideas. I’m most proud of projects that have reached millions of people globally, like my viral videos and my sci-fi short films Simulation and The Last Stand. Seeing audiences resonate with my work and gain a deeper appreciation for science fuels me to keep going.
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. I started sharing science content in 2008 without any thought of making it a business. There were challenges—learning video production, tackling misinformation, and staying creative through long hours of work. I overcame these by continuously learning, staying focused on my mission, and being open to feedback. I also believe persistence and adaptability are key to pushing through obstacles.
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that success comes when passion and purpose align. When you love what you do and commit to doing it well, opportunities follow.
I want the world to know that my work is driven by a desire to inspire, educate, and imagine the future. Whether it’s through educational content, futuristic concepts, or sci-fi storytelling, my goal is to push boundaries and make science accessible and exciting for everyone.
My journey as a science communicator led me to deliver four TEDx talks across Europe, each tackling critical topics that matter to humanity. In Cluj (2017), I introduced embryonic cancer therapy, showcasing how gene editing could revolutionize cancer treatment. At TEDxRoma (2018), I emphasized the importance of science-based decision-making to address global challenges like climate change and pollution. In Zagreb (2019), I critiqued the education system, proposing a future driven by personalized, tech-enhanced learning. Most recently, at TEDxZorilor (2022), I focused on combating misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to reignite public trust in science. These talks reflect my commitment to making science accessible, relatable, and impactful, while addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them to the Museum of the Future—a must-see for anyone fascinated by innovation and technology. We’d spend an evening at Jumeirah Beach to enjoy the sunset in a calm, peaceful setting. For something adventurous, a desert safari followed by stargazing would be perfect. I’d also show them Downtown Dubai, including the Burj Khalifa, and wrap up the trip with some time at Alserkal Avenue for art and creativity. It’s a mix of science, stunning visuals, and quality time—things I value most.
For food, we’d keep it varied—there are tons of places to choose from depending on their cravings. One trip is a must though: Global Village. I’d take them there for an evening to enjoy the vibrant mix of cultures, international street food, and the unique pavilions. It’s the perfect spot for fun, variety, and a lively atmosphere.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this to all the people who believed in me throughout my journey. There are countless names, and each has played a role in shaping where I am today. Some offered invaluable advice that propelled me forward, while others provided support and encouragement during the difficult times. At the top of that list is Sebastian Springer, my university professor, who strongly believed in me and offered an incredible amount of support. I’m forever grateful to him and to everyone who contributed—whether through guidance, mentorship, or simply believing in me.
