We had the good fortune of connecting with Haylee Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Haylee, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been a creative and imaginative person since I was a little girl. I always had a vision in my head and did what was needed to bring it to fruition. As I grew older, and tried more outlets that helped me express myself, I began to realize that a career revolving around my own creativity was what made me the happiest. I love the ability to bring something into this world that didn’t exist before. For me that ranges from designing and making clothes, producing music, photography, all the way to painting, making silly videos, or collaborative work with my friends and family.
What should our readers know about your business?
Starting a business has been one of the best learning opportunities for me. Not only have I’ve been able to learn what it takes to run a business, but I’ve also learned a lot about myself as well . Getting to where I am today has definitely not been easy. You have to have a certain level of commitment, consistency, dedication, and be able to see the bigger picture even if reality doesn’t match within that moment.
I have gotten over a lot of the challenges within building a brand just by simply getting out of my own way. I always knew things weren’t going to be 100% perfect, especially with just starting out, but I knew that I had to put 1 foot in front of the other to see the results I was looking.
I feel like what sets me apart from the others is that Highkey Fashion isn’t just about selling clothing. It is about making wearable art. I have been working towards making pieces that go against the grain, that are unique, 1 of 1, and have the ability to stand alone without actually being worn.
Lastly I want people to understand that I put my heart and soul into this and will continue to do so in hopes that I inspire others to do the same within their own creative endeavors.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first area we are definitely going is downtown. There is so many spots for every person of every kind. One of my favorite spots downtown is the Underground Hall near main street. They have so many amazing restaurants there including one of my favorite Birria tacos spots. And from there we could just walk up and down Main Street experiencing the beautiful downtown lights and unique people. I also love seeing the many different parks here in Houston. We have amazingly curated and crafted parks that allow for trails, biking, walking your dogs, or simply having a picnic. We could hit a tour to Eastern Glades, Hermann Park, and Discovery Green. Lastly, we could hit up the Museum of Fine Arts and finish off at one of my favorite bars, Grand Prize.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shout out to literally everyone that I have encountered in my life. My mom, friends, family, mentors, teachers all the way back to elementary, my angels watching over me, EVERYONE. I have been blessed enough to be surrounded by amazing, creative people who not only accept me for who I am, but have seen my potential even when I didn’t see it for myself. They are my motivation and the reason I could never give up.
