We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Coman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I grew up with an engineer father and an artist mother. I am a degreed engineer and I had spent over twenty years in the Oil & Gas industry. I am also a 21 year breast cancer survivor and my best friend had been diagnosed with late stage colon cancer. It reaffirmed my belief that life is not a dress rehearsal. I decided to retire from my career but knew there was something else for me to do. With the help and unerring support of my friend, I registered my company and got to work. Jewelry has always been a passion for me. Like canvas is to painters, precious metals are my palette. Two Little Byrds was born out of this idea in April 2017.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
TLB designs wearable art in sterling silver and 24K gold plate on silver. The name Two Little Byrds has a little story. Calling a woman a byrd in the UK is akin to chick or babe. So isn’t she a pretty byrd is something I would hear while living there. My mother passed away suddenly in 2009. Before she died she used to talk about religion. She would say she was raised Catholic, she loved the way that the Jewish treat their dead, and if she was Hindu she wanted to come back as a bird. So Two Little Byrds represents my mother and I. I spent the first major part of my life in my Dad’s industry and now I can honor my mother with my art.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First and foremost, go eat at Alma Latina in the Heights. The best legit Mexican food and fresh made margaritas. I get the blood orange on the rocks. Delicious. Houston has an amazing museum district. I suggest going to the sculpture garden across from MFAH and the Rothko Chapel on University of St. Thomas campus. I would be remiss if I didn’t say come visit us at The Hive in Rice Village. We are 13 locally owned brands so there is something for everyone. The bar is always open too!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My business has had a lot of love and support over these few years especially in 2020. I was fairly discouraged at the first part of the year, my best friend passed away and finally beat his cancer and the world as we knew it shut down. I was still signed up for a local Houston market in June so I went in ready to represent my business in this new masked world. It was kismet. I was placed across from The Hive. The Hive is a pop up collective wherein each business is a partner. They approached me to join and since last August, it has been a godsend. Overheads are controllable. There are no gimmicks or hidden fees. I have nothing but the deepest of thanks for Dulce David and Gretchen Gilliam for believing in me and my designs.
