We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because, from a young age, the arts chose me. Growing up, I immersed myself in dance, creating choreographies in the garage to the tunes of Prince’s Purple Rain album. Alongside my love for dance, I developed a passion for makeup and hair, frequently experimenting with stage makeup during my time in dance.
Despite societal expectations of a conventional career path, I couldn’t envision myself confined to an office for eight hours a day. However, I felt a sense of uncertainty until I encountered someone working as a makeup and hair artist on location. This revelation opened up a new world for me – one where I could merge my creative instincts with a professional career.
After training with a friend in the industry, I realized that I had found my calling. My work in the makeup industry allows me to express creativity daily and engage with people in diverse ways. Whether it’s enhancing the beauty of brides and their bridal parties, participating in artistic fashion shows at museums, or teaching practical makeup tips, every day brings new and fulfilling experiences.
My journey showcases the importance of exploring unconventional paths to discover where one truly belongs. Pursuing an artistic career not only aligns with my passion for creativity but also provides an opportunity to share my expertise, helping women feel beautiful inside and out. In the world of makeup, I’ve found a space where I can continually inspire and make a positive impact on others.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets Hues by Heather apart isn’t just the 20+ years in the beauty business; it’s the genuine care and pride we infuse into every project. From bridal glam to commercial shoots, I don’t just do a job; I create an experience.
Our commitment goes beyond the ordinary. We plan meticulously, offer a stress-free environment, and, if needed, step in to handle unexpected challenges. Here’s a fun fact: I once found myself cutting and sewing a bridesmaid’s dress. Now, I’m no seamstress, but when things needed to be done, I jumped in. It’s about going that extra mile, making sure everything is perfect, even the things you didn’t expect.
And it’s not just about bridal beauty. When working with commercial clients, we dive deep into their vision, talk to directors, and ensure we understand the whole picture.
But it’s not just about what I do; it’s about the relationships we’ve built. Working with families for years, from school dances to weddings, has become a cherished tradition.
Challenges, after all, are temporary. They teach us, guide us, and show us what we’re made of. And yes, someone could hire someone cheaper, but are they getting a seasoned artist who’ll go that extra mile?
What truly sets Hues by Heather apart is our emphasis on listening. It’s not just about painting faces; it’s about understanding your vision, ensuring you feel beautiful inside and out. But my passion doesn’t stop there. Teaching women of all ages to do everyday makeup that suits them is something close to my heart. Some weren’t taught, some got stuck in a routine, and my goal is to make a difference in their confidence, one step at a time.
In a world where many provide a service, Hues by Heather offers an experience – one that’s personal, exceptional, and filled with passion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s incredible how our favorite spots in the city can evolve over the years, isn’t it? Houston holds a treasure trove of memories for me. One place that stands out is Astroworld – from family trips in my younger days to adventures with friends as I grew older, it’s a nostalgic haven.
Transitioning to more recent memories, getting a peek “behind the scenes” at various places has been a privilege. The Museum of Fine Arts holds a special place, especially since my involvement in MUFA fashion shows. The diversity of exhibits there never ceases to amaze me. And let’s not forget the Children’s Museum – its interactive nature makes it a gem.
Discovery Green is another favorite, offering a blend of activities, picturesque spots, and fantastic dining options nearby. Venturing slightly outside the city, NASA and Galveston are must-visits. Exploring the wonders of space at NASA left me in awe, and the historic home tours and Dolphin tour in Galveston are favorites, with my daughter and I making the trip multiple times a year.
Memorial Park, with its dual charm of being an excellent exercise spot and a people-watching haven, is a frequent stop. And when it comes to dining, Del Friscos is a top pick, though, let’s face it, Houston itself is a food lover’s paradise. The variety and quality of our local cuisine are unmatched.
Houston’s diverse offerings truly make it a city close to my heart, with each spot weaving a unique tapestry of memories and experiences.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh, let me tell you about some amazing people who’ve been absolute game-changers! First up, shoutout to Danielle Doyle – an incredible mentor and artist who guided me through the ropes, unveiling the vast possibilities within the industry. From the fundamentals to the intricate paths of bridal, special occasions, and the commercial side. Danielle has been my compass and inspiration.
But the support didn’t stop there. Huge thanks to fellow artists, photographers, and clients who had my back and fueled my passion! Their encouragement turned challenges into stepping stones, and I can’t thank them enough.
And of course, a massive shoutout to my parents – the real MVPs. Going solo in the makeup business might have sounded crazy to some, but Mom and Dad, have always been my rock. Even my Dad, being a “company” man, might’ve found it a bit alien, their support and advice were always about what I wanted to do, not what they thought I should do. I’m truly #blessed to have their love and support throughout my life.
