We had the good fortune of connecting with Howard Calvert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Howard, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
As a single parent, a father, I am faced with many challenges when parenting my kids. However, I believe the most important thing I’ve done to make a strong impact on my kids, is teaching them self-love, respect, and keeping them educated. As an Actor, I am a steady role model in their lives, showing them hard work ethics. I allow them to experience some of my hard work, as I stay the course towards my goals. Giving my kids strong leadership allows them to believe in themselves, and me. I gravitate towards positive actions with them at all times, and fastly approach any negative challenges they encounter. Children deserve nurturing environments and families, in which their emotional, educational, physical, and social needs can be met consistently. I have mainly boys. I strive to teach them knowledge of manhood. However, I am constantly making them aware of the social, and injustice challenges they may face in life as well. Reminding my children how important family and education is, working hard, and staying together as a team, is the best impact I can have on them.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a man of large caliber, I’m set apart in specialty roles. For example, I’m always told “you look like Shaq” this is a surplus for me when the film director’s are looking for actors to play such roles. My deep distinctive voice allows for me to be recognized. quickly, and sets a tone for the roles I play. I began my acting journey with the movie Race War. I considered this to be my best work yet. After doing the film, I discovered that acting was my dream match. Ultimately, I consummated relationships with many film producers, directors, and professionals alike within my community, creating a place for me in Community Theater. Along the way I’ve learned that it takes persistency to be rewarded in your artistry, and to always be involved in your creations first hand. I want the world to know that I’m not just about my artistry, but my community as well. My foundation, The Howard Calvert Foundation, hels in feeding the homeless of Houston.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to The Melting Pot & Phil & Derek’s Restaurant. These are two great places to have fun, while enjoying a tasty meal. I would then recommend they visit Downtown Houston’s Discovery Green Park, and nightlife. Downtown is an exciting place for the nightlifes., one can discover various cultures here.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank God first, and foremost. My Management Team at CherryRich Publishing, LLC, family, and my kids. My kids are my biggest inspiration.
