Meet Imani Henry | Private Violin Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Imani Henry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Imani, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
I would love to have a full lesson studio. I want to rent/own my own space where my students will come to me. This would allow me to teach more students per day because I would not be traveling.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In addition to teaching private violin lessons, I am also an Orchestra Director in CFISD. I am very proud to be a part of this school district as they are very supportive of Fine Arts. I have had the opportunity to build up a brand new program in the district which is an honor and we have already come home with awards!
I have been blessed with wonderful opportunities that have allowed me to get to where I am. I’m not saying it has been easy, but I couldn’t move forward if I didn’t recognize God.
The biggest thing I’ve learned along this journey is to trust myself and the knowledge of my craft.
The reason I chose Melanin Violin as my brand name is because I want to be unapologetic about who I am and my culture. I want people who look like me to have a space where they can be themselves in music. People who look like me are not always represented in the Orchestra space and I want to be that outlet for people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One place I would definitely take someone visiting Houston is The Breakfast Klub. Their food is delicious! I would also also take someone on a bike tour in 3rd Ward. That gives an opportunity to see a few sites while also getting a little exercise. It’s also very fun!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out two people. My mother, Dr. Cheryl Henry, has had the biggest influence on me. She has always been successful and has strived to be the best at everything she does. My mother expects nothing less from me.
The second person I want to shout out is Victoria Campion, my high school orchestra director. She has always been an encouragement to me in high school and even today. I was even able to work with her professionally before she retired!
