We had the good fortune of connecting with J. Benjamin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J., what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I work with my middle son. He’s 13 and not an event or market goes by without someone telling me how they’re so impressed with him or how he reminds him of them at that age because their parents made them work with them at that age. And I tell them all the same thing. Either he will hate working weekends and holidays and go to college for a career less physically impactful or he’s just going to be a hard working man. Either way Im ok with lol.
But working with him over the last year I have really seen him come out of his shell. From the way he speaks to people, to the way he handles social situations with his friends at school. He has become more confident in who he is and I cant be more proud of the young man he has become. I think thats the biggest impact I’ve had on him. Now, if I can get the other two more active in the company, Ill be one proud dad lol.
What should our readers know about your business?
I think what sets Poplife apart from other companies is our focus. We dont sell popcorn AND candy or chips. We dont sell popcorn AND lemonade/drinks. We sell popcorn and popcorn is the focus. And our customers see that. We worked a long time to get our product to a consistency our customers depend on. So when you try one of our top flavors in the summer, you can be certain the next time you have it, it will be as tasty as you remembered. That and we have pretty good customer service too.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is over 10 thousand square miles according to its metropolitan statistical area. There’s just no way to really experience all that it has to offer in one visit. But if I wanted to show someone a good time then we would look no further than the 2 square miles of downtown Houston. There we can eat some of the best food from BBQ to Korean, visit our cleaner and safer version of NYC’s Central Park that we call discovery green. There we can ice skate, eat restaurant or street food and attend one of the many festivals or events they have there. Of course catch an Astros or Rockets game. And if it’s Rodeo time Reliant is a quick train ride away.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always tell people I just pop the popcorn and show up to sale. The real magic behind the success of the company all is due to my wife. She’s the glue that holds together all the important aspects of the company. From social media to scheduling markets and events to just being a real Jefa “Boss lady” when running the day to day operations of the company.
While Im without a doubt the beauty of Poplife she is definitely the brains.
