We had the good fortune of connecting with J Puff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from all over I was born in Indiana then moved to Wisconsin lived there till I was 10 then moved to Maryland where I lived until I left for North Carolina to be homeless pursue music and from there I slowly made my way down to Texas
I been through a lot from instability and trauma and stress that built up over time and ran my depression, that’s why I make the music I make, I learned to put my emotions in my songs and try to help others not feel how I have felt ,
I grew up in small homes pretty poor but my mom did everything she could to keep us at float, I would do a lot and act out when I was younger I didn’t know any better and got into a lot of deep shizz as a kid .
Overtime tho I’ve grown and really learned to use my passion as a tool for positivity ,
My hometown in Maryland to my home in houston has all taught me to be the best me I can be and try to help make anyone around me smile and upbeat for at least that little moment !
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is unique ! I feel I really have been molded into an
Enigma in this field
My genre is called alternative experimental Its a little bit of everything I’d compare it to cologne a lot of different layers that create a truly beautiful flavor
My genre mainly consist of alt rock/pop/rap
With hints of edm, rnb and hyper-pop
It’s a pretty wild mix but makes for some great vibes it makes me happy to be different but it creates different challenges as well, since I’m not from houston initially it was hard to find shows to perform at that was in my genre so I really had to do any show I could at first ! But it was all worth it I’ve met so many amazing people and have learned so much from the process .
I’ve learned to just keep going and never give in to what others say or think .
I learned to trust myself and do what I think is right.
Right now I would love for the world to see the new side of my music and embrace it like they have embraced many of my songs before !
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is so much to do in houston it’s insane I actually have a fellow artist moving from Maryland to houston next week and I plan on taking them everywhere ! Best part of houston is there is always something new I love to go on my maps and type near me and go to the first interesting spot!
Downtown has some amazing nightlife like hearts, spires, and bars up the wazoo lol, but also houston has an amazing underground scene like super happy fun land , emo nite at Barbarellas , the church !
And it’s never to much to drive 2-3 hrs and ur in Austin and San Antonio both amazing views and amazing pubs !!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say a lot of my success is through my growth and the people I have met on the way I would say a lot of my success would be from a music group hmb and jay sicario and my friends and family taz and demonta Really even the people who have affected me negatively I would give them a lot of recognition to why my music is the way it is today so also to my haters I love you and thank you sincerely
