We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackson Smalling and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackson, what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are many factors that I could credit for the success of my business, but the most important factor would have to be my customers. I have the most supportive and loyal customer base in the world, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them. Most of my new customers come from referrals that I have gotten from long-time customers. The tremendous support of my customers has been the most important factor behind my success, and it has helped me grow my business rapidly.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my first business, Mobile Shine, when I was 15 years old. I started Mobile Shine as a small neighborhood business that was just supposed to make me some extra money over the summer. However, as I started to gain more customers, I started to see the potential that my business had. I continued to grow Mobile Shine year-round, and as I got to know my customers better, they started to ask me if I could do other jobs for them. Soon enough, power washing, pool cleaning, and errand running jobs started making regular appearances on my schedule. Because of this influx of new jobs, I created Jack of All Trades, my business that provides basic residential services. Creating Jack of All Trades has allowed me to market these services, instead of having to wait for my customers to ask me about them.

Mobile Shine and Jack of All Trades have both grown steadily over the past couple of years, and I was looking into how I could build on the relationships that I have with my customers. I decided that I was going to get my real estate sales agent license and become a REALTOR®. I already had an interest in real estate and entrepreneurship, so it seemed like the perfect fit for my next business. I have spent the past year or so working to get my real estate sales license while running my two businesses. I’m also a student at the University of Houston, so it’s been a struggle juggling all of these things at once. I passed both of my real estate exams on the first try in February, and signed with Keller Williams SouthWest shortly after. I am finishing up my new agent training soon, and I am hoping to be a REALTOR® full time by this summer.

I have learned a lot from running my own businesses over the past few years. I have had it a lot easier than many entrepreneurs, mainly because I started as young as I did. Even though things have been challenging, I haven’t had to pay rent or any other bills that could hinder the success of my businesses. I’m grateful for the opportunities that I have, and I am excited about what the future holds.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much to do in Houston. I’ve lived here my whole life, so it’s hard to pinpoint my favorite things here. I would have to say the Houston Rodeo is by far one of the best things the city has to offer. If you live in or around Houston, the rodeo is something you can’t miss out on. Houston major league sports events are always fun to go to as well. Houston is also known for its good food. Some of my favorite spots are Taste of Texas, The Pit Room, Candente, and Coltivare. I have been to restaurants all over the city, and these are by far my favorites. It’s hard to make this list as short as it is, but I think it sums up all of my favorite places in Houston.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family and my customers. My business has grown tremendously over the past couple of years, and that wouldn’t have been possible without their support.
