We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacob, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I tend to lean toward being terrified of risk. It is so easy for me to get caught up in the “what-ifs” of even making the decision before I even consider making the decision. I am thankful to God for someone like my wife who has been the risk taker in our marriage and she has been a huge inspiration in my life when it has come to making big leaps of faith. In 2022. I decided to make a big leap of faith and walk away from my full time job. Crazy, I know. You don’t have to tell me. Like I said, when I take risks I have to go through every “what if” possible and I did for two months before I even took the steps to leaving. It was rough, but I did it. God is so funny, because you guys have asked to interview me in the PROCESS where everything still seems so raw. I have seen the fruit of making such a big and crazy leap. I saw an increase in my business after taking the step, and I saw God make amazing connections and give direction to what is next for our lives. We are still seeing Him do it. To the ones that are considering making such big leaps, and have to wrestle to do so, consider me. Yes, it’s crazy, it’s hard, it’s scary but it’s also fun. As far as I know, God works everything for the good of them that love Him and are called according to His purpose.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to believe that my work is simply different from others or set apart because it’s me. While photography can be perceived as a business venture that is oversaturated, I would agree but also disagree. I disagree because there is not another ‘me’ out there taking photos. In every session I do, I thrive to give clients a unique experience that they can not get from anyone else simply because it is me. In this, I have seen growth in my craft and being confident in my individuality has even allowed me to kill comparison and overcome imposter syndrome. This is what I am most proud of. I would rather take time getting to know a client and giving them an experience that best suits their comfort so that I can create effectively. Mind you, I am still in the process. This has been one of the hardest and more difficult ventures to pursue. After gleaning from other photographers that have done or are doing the same as me the common encouragement has been “do not give up”. I hang on to that and this is how I overcome challenges. I am learning and still make myself a student so that I can grow and create effectively. My faith keeps my strong, and this is very important to ‘my brand’. I want people to know that there was a creator and creativity is in our DNA, in some form or fashion.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I live in Rosenberg Texas, and I love this town. I have lived here all my life and as far as I know, I will have roots here. If I had a friend visiting here, I would show them our lovely town and even hit some of the food gems that are here. Some ‘tex/mex’ spots, some bbq places and even some coffee spots. However, Houston has better coffee shops and a variety of things to eat so we would definitely visit a lot of places in the Houston area. I am super lenient, and really do not need an itinerary as I would rather just go with the flow. I can sit at a coffee shop for hours with good company and just talk about everything.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God first, the one that saved my soul, the creator that gave us, as individuals, the ability to create whatever that may look like. And of course, to my wife Joscelin. She has been my best cheerleader, my best encourager and has added so much to me. She is also an amazing creative that has been the social media brains behind SomosReyes Photography, as she has such a gifting to do so.
