We had the good fortune of connecting with Jae Mendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jae, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’m Jae! My Career started off as a coping mechanism and something to get my mind at calm waters in such a devastating time of my life. Before that, I remember growing up enjoying the fun of painting nails but I never thought I would be making myself a Nail Artist. At 15 I slowly started buying the necessary supplies to start off and found myself investing in more supply. I moved from Chicago to Houston and by the age of 16 I was picking up clients slowly but steady, now at the age of 18 a Licensed Cosmetologist, so far I have built a luxurious clientele that values me and allows me to live comfortably knowing I have found my purpose and being able to be a vessel to others, I feel fulfilled by making ladies feel confident and happy with their look.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work is made for luxurious women and gentlemen who enjoy high maintenance and quality art, I am most proud of how far I’ve came as a Latina business owner and how much I have achieved and mastered with my work, I’m even more proud of what’s to come for me and my business as I continue to work hard and persevere through everything that comes my way. I have overcame very difficult and stagnant conditions by learning what I could do differently to prevent it from being a problem and rise above. A great lesson that I’ve learned is patience, Great things do in fact take time, another lesson I’ve learned is management; management within your business is most valuable to continue to succeed and prevent burnout! As someone who’s struggled with mental health, being organized helps keep me on track and not loose myself in the process. If there is one thing I’d like to let the world know about my business is that I service each client with love and gratitude, I do pray over my chair and name. I’m a very strong believer in The most high and I’m beyond thankful I get to build bonds with the women they bring into my life along the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love going on Nail supply runs and purchasing new supplies for my clients, Shoutout: Dynamic Nail Supply! I also enjoy getting coffee and and doing a little retail therapy for myself.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I could bring spotlight or recognition to someone who was part my story; to my mother who always supported and continues to believe in my gift and vision when it sounds unrealistic to others. I would also give credit to a loved one that unfortunately no longer with us. As much as a gentleman he was, they always participated in my girly activities and played a big brother role in my life, I remember him hyping me up as we got ready for special occasions and would make sure I was safe at any function we went to together. That’s the kind of person he was. The main thing of all, he was my reason to pick up a new hobby during that storm. I can wholeheartedly say they are my biggest reason and inspiration to change my reality and continue to create something bigger than the reality some of us grew up with!
