We had the good fortune of connecting with Jahmilah Tyson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jahmilah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is God. My faith in and relationship with God shapes all areas of my life. Matthew 6:33 says to seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness and all other things will be added unto you. I make sure to keep God first and not lose sight of my purpose in Him. By living that verse, I have been given many opportunities that I wouldn’t ever imagine myself receiving.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My whole experience has been about being bold, putting myself out there, and taking risks. It is not easy. I am very soft spoken and I am completely fine with playing the background. What helps me get through the challenges that I face is prayer. Going to God in prayer helps to strengthen me spiritually, it helps to humble me, and to give me the courage to keep pressing forward. I’ve learned that I cannot do anything by own might and power; I need God. My brand, The Beautiful One, is built upon knowing who I am in God and walking in that. I want other people to know who they are and be encouraged to walk in that. When I take someone’s photo, I want them to see the final product and be proud of what they see.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will definitely take them to church with me. I would definitely want them to experience the authentic teaching of the Bible. We’d definitely go to midtown to eat. Taste Bar + Kitchen would be on the list because their Jerk Lamb-chops are a must. We’d go to a drive-in movie, have a game night, and possibly hit up the Lagoon in Lago Mar. I’d definitely find a day for us to hit up one of the museums and some of Houston’s hidden gems. I would definitely have my camera in tow.
It’s hard to really say because all of my friends live in Houston.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Off top, all the credit goes to God for giving me ideas and creativity, especially when I feel like giving up. He has also surrounded me with some pretty solid people that have continuously encouraged me to keep pushing forward, not give up, and to keep pursuing my dreams. God is the real MVP!
