We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamaal Roy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamaal, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’d like to say this path chose me. I have all these ideas in my head. Some are good, some are bad. Some sound better in my head than the actual finished product. But it drives me crazy to not get it out. I lose sleep over it sometimes. After a while it stopped being about the people and became more about my sanity.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I stay away from trends and regional sounds that others may jump on because its hot for the moment. At a point where drill music was/is the go-to, I have no issue going with boom-bap. Its very important for me to not forget who I am. I won’t make anything I wouldn’t want to hear myself.
Most people hate taxes! My most proud moment in persuing music had to be when I got my first documents to file during tax season. Its odd, but at that point I was able to say okay, I’m a rapper (laughs) and this isn’t just some hobby.
I got to where I am today by moving at my own pace. I drop when I want. I don’t answer to anyone. Its the only easy part about what I do and how I do it. I take alot of losses too, with being a dad and working full time, I don’t have the luxury of picking up and going whenever I want. I’ve missed alot of opportunities. I try not to stress over that too much because my life is great! I wouldn’t trade with anyone. I take it all as…I’m simply where I’m meant to be. In the end I want the world to know that I have no regrets at all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve been performing at the Middle East alot lately. I don’t show my face often, and when I do its for a show. The Middle East has been the spot. If you’re trying to spend some money, I’d say hit up any of the Laced locations for sneakers and clothing. Somewhere in between all that you have to go to a Celtics game!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Roy “International Show” Studmire is one semi-like minded brother of mine who keeps me grounded. He checks me when I’m out of line. He tells me when my material isn’t good. He prays for me. That guy is pure!
