We had the good fortune of connecting with James Militano ( Hov ) Damien Odegbile ( Montana ) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James Militano ( Hov ), what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind our success is first building a solid foundation of like minded individuals who see the vision of our brand and are willing to partake in the journey to make it what it is now. Second, is being relentless and fearless in the process of investing and creating. Knowing that you may not have the answer to be successful but willing to do whatever it takes to find that information as long as it is legal and honest. Finally, our support system and network which was built before the brand was ever created. This gave my partner and I the mindset that as long as we stay the course, we will succeed in this fashion lane no matter what obstacles we may face.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets us apart, is the meaning and message we wish to portray and personify through our clothing while using unique designs that demand attention due to how it glistens in the light ! The message being “We are all living Legends, encouraging people to pursue their fullest potential and give each other their flowers while we are still able to smell them”. We are very excited about our future in the business because we are just getting warmed up. We are confident that if we keep striving for success, more doors will open for Living Legends Fashion. Although we have had genuine relationships with a few friends in the entertainment world prior to getting into fashion we have since developed relationships with a few more people in the entertainment business due to our brand by just being in the mix. Incase anyone is wondering the relevance, music and fashion are quite intertwined. Relationships with influencers can go a long way if channeled in the right direction. However, we would not say it has been a walk in the park getting into this industry. It took a lot of time management skills, patience, tenacity and learning from good and bad experiences. For instance, vetting and finding the right manufacturers that will bring your vision to life. We definitely had a few hick ups with that earlier on. We try to make it a habit to network when opportunities to do so are presented. This has brought about more awareness to our brand and has helped get us to where we are today. The most important tool for any upcoming business owner or designer in my opinion is having sustainable cash flow to invest into your business. Finding someone trustworthy who sees and believes in your vision that is willing to go through the process of investing their valuable time and hard earned money as also been a major key. This has played a substantial role in keeping ourselves accountable as partners
A major lesson we learned along the way is that we cannot focus too much on what one’s present circumstances may be. Rather, you keep your eye on the ball and know that you will get to your destination as long you keep working hard at it. However you must seek information and educate yourself on your industry because that will help elevate your business and keep you relevant. I can certainly say that social media helps a lot with keeping us in the loop.
Living Legends Fashion wants the world to know that we are a prestigious clothing brand that will not stop our campaign to send messages that we feel will impact our customers positively. We want everyone in the world to know that it does not matter where you are from or where you currently are. What matters is where you are going. Do not let your present circumstance deter you from pursuing your dream that will make you a Living Legend ! Look at myself and Montana, James a Puerto Rican and Italian kid from Bedstuy, Brooklyn, Montana born in Lagos, Nigeria then spent most of his teen to adult years in the DC metropolitan area. Two people from totally different backgrounds connected by the grace of God and sharing the vision to build a very lucrative business that we are both a passionate about. To whoever is reading this that just needs some kind of inspiration or motivation, this can certainly be you. Make sure you always put relationships before money especially when you are in a service based business because the money will come as long as your customers are satisfied. Yes we sell a product but with this we provide people with self awareness. Look good, feel good, chase your dreams and be det ermined to live life to the fullest. The great Jim Rohn said “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Don’t wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom“
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
when you are in Houston, definitely make your way to Prospect Park if looking to catch a vibe with good music and food. For fine dining restaurants, check out Steak 48 and Joey Uptown. If looking for some West African food, try Ariya Suya. Before hitting the night life hit up a Houston Rockets or Texans game, Space center and museum of natural science. After getting a feel for the city during the day, at night you definitely want to go to Kamp on Thursday, Kapri on a Friday, depending on the weather Cle Pool Party during the day on Saturday then O2 lounge on Saturday night. On Sunday Chapman & Kirby is where you want to be for brunch then at night make your way to Address. When in doubt we call the “Vibe Specialist” if we need to know where its lit at !
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Want to give the biggest shoutout to Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Inc which is a collegiate and international organization. Damien (GKA Montana) pledged at the Better Business Chapter of Bull Dog 1 (Bowie State) and I charted the Bengal chapter (Buffalo State). Damien travelled all the way from the DMV to my probate in Buffalo NY. This was actually how we met for the first time. Over the years our brotherhood grew stronger and that ignited our partnership and played a significant role in building our strong foundation for our business. Being a member of Groove Phi Groove as allowed us to have access to a host of people and networks worldwide. Without this organization Damien and I would have never crossed paths. We definitely like to give a special shout out two of our older Groove brothers that have been great mentors to us Fl Jacques Webster Sr and Fl Ernesto Clarke II. We certainly have a ton of other Groove brothers over the globe that have supported us in this journey as well but that list would go on and on but they know themselves. Both of our families have been there from day one encouraging and pushing us. It is great feeling to see the people you love rocking your gear.
We would also like to shout out Goya Menor, Odumodublvck, King Kanja and Young Dee as they were the first four global entertainers to rock our brand. We have a few more that we can’t disclose yet giving that those content have not been released yet.
We would like to shout out Vibe Specialist, MC King Duke, Mc Firekyle and MC Mufasa DJ Joe Catdaddy and Radiotwin Mrgo30 for always recognizing our brand actually rocking it as well .
Lastly, we want to say a big thank you to Voyage Houston for reaching out to us and giving us their platform to tell our story.
