We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Melancon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always had a passion for doing hair and many desires of decorating. As a child I had dolls, and always loved doing their hair. when I became older I started doing my friends hair and also teachers and peers in school. I noticed I had a gift and a talent that I could prosper in for many years. I believe that when you know what it is you love to do then nothing ever feels like work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Professional License Cosmetologist and Makeup Artist . I am proud of my accomplishments over the years of being able to put many smiles on many faces and watch how transforming people with their appearances has truly been a joy not only for me but for them as well. Growing in relationships with my clientele has been the most exciting and rewarding because you never know (Who is Sitting In Your Chair) meaning every ones experience is so different, conversations are so different, personalities are so different ect. You build long friendships and share so many stories and ideas. It’s like having an extended family. The most exciting part is knowing your job never feels like work.

I began on my cosmetology journey in high school my senior year. I started at a vocation school as an elective in high school. at the time I was introduced to the start of taking a trade before possibly going to college. Becoming a hairstylist was always a desire of mines. So I went for it . When I started my first class I felt in my heart I was where I needed to be . I felt whole. I studied really hard and may hours to achieve passing and met some awesome people along the way and are still in contact with to this day.

After I graduated high school I went on to the School Of Cosmetology in Opelousas Louisiana where I am originally from. I transferred my hours that I retained from my vocation school which was Washington Vocation School in Louisiana and put those hours towards the hours I needed for cosmetology school to complete which were a total of 1500 hrs at the time. Studying became a normal routine in my days of beauty school. I will say (It’s More Than Just Doing Hair). The Anatomy, the science and the math of it all really made me know the difference between doing hair and becoming a License Professional to Create. It was hard. but if you study and follow your heart. Nothing is as hard as it seems

I overcame my challenges through Prayer, Prayer, and More Prayer. Faith was my biggest portion of how I overcame my fears of testing and passing. In all reality Hard Work you have to study.

The lessons I learned along the ways is (BE PATIENT) because patience is what sets you apart from not giving up. Also
find opportunity avenues to keep you interested. Run everything like a Business even in your personality. Set yourself a Goal.

What I want the world to know is Never give up! In times of darkness and confusion there is always light shining though the cracks. Reminding you that though everything may seem like much and so hard to achieve it is just then that you are closer to your accomplishments.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My Best friend loves to eat and travel that is so her. Well because I haven’t been in Houston my whole life It would be an itinerary we would both be on lol. The first stop food place would be the Turkey Leg Hut as it is one of the most raved about here in Tx for great food, drinks, and hangouts. We have never been but have been looking forward to going . Prospect Park is a nice hangout and chill sports bar and eatery as well . Very fun atmosphere also great music. As I am growing hear in Houston Me and my friend would have to definitely have to google everything else lol.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Mother to be honest. She is the sole definition of a true supportive mother and friend. She is the reason I am so dedicated to what I love when it comes down to being exactly what I wanted to be. She taught me at a very early age that what ever I loved and wanted to do. I could do it! She let me be as creative as I desired to be with no judgement just full support and love. I am who I am today along with my achievements because of the person who I can honestly say deserves it the most. Though she may not be a social media guru and may never see this shoutout but for in this magazine. I personally want to thank her for being exactly what I needed to help me on my journey of life in trusting that what God gave me (My Gift) would make room for me. and many doors and blessings have come because someone Believed in me and taught me to believe in myself.
