We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Mack and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, how do you think about risk?
I used to think taking risk was thinking outside the box and trying to be as different as you possibly could in this industry but I was wrong. Everyone as an individual has something so special to contribute to whatever it is that they do and there’s a lane specifically for your differences. Once I realized and applied this to my music career it put into perspective that standing in who I am was the true risk taking. No matter how awkward , how my edges laid or who featured on my tracks. What defines Janelle Mack is my ability to be myself in my art knowing what I have to offer to the music world is more than good enough. Ever since I changed my perspective on risk taking I never back down from anything that I want. If theres someone I want to work with… I tell them. Its helped to trust myself and my personal creative process a lot more.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As of right now im most proud of the album that SMP and I have been working on for the past couple of months. Ive worked on an EP previously but it wasn’t at all what I wanted to represent me as an artist. I was working with people who truly didn’t have my best interest at heart at that time but now that I do you can absolutely hear it in the music. Im super grateful and extremely excited to drop the project 2021! Nothing about this journey has been easy figuring out my sound, finding a team that truly believed in me etc but I dont believe anything worth having is easy. I had to learn that the people that find a way are the people that I love to surround myself with. I love to work hard and love the concept of growth …. I learned to cut out anyone who was comfortable being stagnant and also confront those very same thoughts in myself. I want the world to know that I am Janelle Mack and the only person that can tell the truth about my story is myself… It’ll all be in the music!!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly I would prefer ppl not come to The Bronx to vacation. Our culture is rich and beautiful and very hard to understand if you aren’t from here. But pre covid if a friend came to visit I mostly have fun at my best friend Travis’s get togethers or in Manhattan at Pianos. Every New Yorker knows about nights at Pianos !
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Throughout my career i’ve been lucky enough to cross paths with some amazingly talented individuals who have definitely contributed to my life and artistry. Artists such as Kali Pop, P Saint, and Maxine Ashley have truly helped me grow internally as a human being and as an artist for sure. I am working on an album that is produced by Tay Svpreme and Jah Noiz and they are both some of the best producers I have ever worked with. Our team Supreme Musick Productions has truly become my work family and i’m excited to share what we’ve all created.
