We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my own business because I felt I had the tools to be successful, but also because I wanted to be able to make my own decisions about pricing in order to reach and help as many people as possible. In my first year of being an IASIS Certified Provider of IASIS MicroCurrent Neurofeedback, I worked for a non-profit who set the pricing and the parameters of how I would provide services. Throughout the year that I worked there, I realized many things could be done better and more efficiently and started to create my own vision of what that might look like. The biggest motivator for me going out on my own was that I wanted my services to be affordable as my goal is to help those who want help. The cost of my services at the non-profit was out of even my own price range, which troubled me more and more as time went by. I now charge about half of what I did then and feel much better able to serve more people. We stay busy and that is important to me–facilitating health and wellness (and happiness) in as many people as we can!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is The Mind Connection. We are a Brain Health Center, focused on healing the brain in a natural, painless and safe way. Our brain controls everything we think and feel, our behaviors, our relationships and more. We believe that mental health = brain health! Our IASIS MicroCurrent Neurofeedback facilitates brain healing by balancing the brain and helping it to function better. We help with all kinds of mental, emotional and physical conditions: anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, addiction, PTSD, headaches/migraines, concussions/TBI, autism, insomnia, memory, chronic fatigue, brain fog, chronic pain, stroke and more. The experience of IASIS is like a spa treatment for the brain–it is pleasant and safe for all ages, including young children. We are most proud of being a proponent of natural ways to support brain and body health. We help our clients avoid and/or reduce/eliminate medications and learn to support their bodies in a way that does not damage their brain. In addition to MCN, we offer organic, non-toxic products to support the body and brain that address hormone balancing, sleep, immune support, gut health, body and hair care, skin conditions, adrenal fatigue and more. Exposing our bodies to toxic chemicals in our every day products affects our brain negatively and we are on a mission to help our clients avoid this!
Being in private practice has its challenges, but we work hard at separating ourselves from other businesses by focusing on what we feel is the most important thing for everyone–brain health. We offer counseling and brainspotting (for processing trauma) as well, but we find these services are much more effective when coupled with MCN and learning how to support the body in a natural, non-toxic way. Our biggest challenge is getting the word out to the world that they have options in healing their mental, emotional and physical conditions that do not have to involve medications. I wouldn’t say that we’ve overcome that challenge yet, but our clients are our biggest source of business as they refer their loved ones to us regularly. We would like to reach more people and show them a better way to living their life to the fullest.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I live in Magnolia, northwest of Houston, and there’s not a lot of exciting things to do in my town. I would definitely take a visitor to eat at El Tiempo for their amazing crab nachos and probably to a Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Stadium downtown. A visit to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Zoo would be a must, but not on the same day. We would also visit the Butterfly Exhibit at the Museum as butterflies are my favorite. Depending on the time of year, we would spend time in my backyard pool, enjoying the sunshine, maybe catch a broadway show downtown. We would go have sushi at Umami Grill & Sushi in Magnolia, and shop at The Galleria. Another thing would be to check out the Farmer’s Market in Tomball and Victoria’s Natural Market in Cypress.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think the biggest factor in getting me to where I am today was the experience of my daughter’s drug addiction and recovery process. Therefore, my daughter, now 22 and 4+ years sober and my business partner, is someone I owe a lot of credit and gratefulness to. That may sound strange, but ultimately, if it hadn’t been for her substance use problem and the phenomenon of recovery, I would not be where I am today. Recovery was life-changing for me, and the parent program at her treatment center, The Pathway Program, in Phoenix, AZ, was integral in not only changing my life, but transforming my relationship with my daughter. Through recovery and the 12 steps, reading as many books about addiction as I could find, attending meetings, sponsoring other parents, and facilitating meetings, I have incorporated these things into my life and my livelihood. And my daughter works alongside me. Thanks to God, Recovery and Regan!
