We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarquita Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jarquita, how do you think about risk?
I have always taken risks and once I realized God would always keep me, the more risks I was willing to take. I’m from Jackson, MS and it’s not a place where you grow up scared of anything, but I was always fearful with anything regarding my career and the unknown. However, the possibility of not knowing what I could be missing out on if I didn’t open my law firm, or commit to the gym, or whatever it may be outweighs my fears. I’ve travelled solo, relocated with no job or plan and more but every time, God kept me. I educate myself about about interests and business ventures I want to pursue before executing on anything and I am intentional about surrounding myself with people who have been where I am. I have relocated with no family and no plan, but here I am four years later with my own law firm. I’ve travelled solo and met some of my closest friends. Every risk did not yield positive results, but even the setbacks taught me valuable lessons. Whether it was a risk I have taken in my career or personal life, I’ve always ended up with what I needed. If you’re not constantly doing things that make you afraid, are you really living? Some risks are just worth the reward.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a law firm where I specialize in family law and personal injury. I started my own law firm to have more autonomy over the clients and the type of work I did but I was so afraid because I’m a first generation law student and I have no fall back plan or person. I would work at a firm and very few people of color were the client and I was no longer helping people who look like me and I did not like that. A lot of people do not understand Black family dynamics and as a Black woman, I understand and I want a seat at that table to assist my people. I decided to specialize in family law as I’ve been practicing it for almost five years and this was the opportunity to bring my expertise into my community. Personal injury is truly personal to me. As a victim of a car accident where I was hit by a drunk driver, I understand the severity & importance of having proper representation and someone that cares about the effect of the accident on you and your family.
I had no intention of opening my law firm but no job satisfied me. I saw what it took to run and work cases from intake to trial so after many prayers and conversations with mentors and colleagues, I took the leap. The journey has been scary and fulfilling but I am learning a lot and growing more in my career. I realize that as long as I am educating myself, and never afraid to ask for help, I will constantly strive in my career.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God always because He answered prayers I prayed about my career at ten. I then thank my mother for always encouraging and believing in me. I thank my two beautiful daughters who give me a reason to show up as my authentic self, to work hard and be intentional in all things. Lastly, I thank my village of friends who pray & uplift me, mentors and colleagues, and all those who have poured into me and my children with genuine love and support.
