We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Britton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When starting my business, as with all things that I indulge, I have to have purpose. I don’t start something without thinking about intention, impact and influence. Intention-what is my work saying about me and the world around me? Impact- who is going to learn or benefit from my work? Influence- what will my work say in the next 5, 10, 15+ years?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
By day, I am a Dean of Students, working with high schoolers in 9th-12th grade. My creativity, organization, and detailed orientation, in this field has translated, believe it or not, to my work as a stylist and online store owner. What makes my business different is the diversity and flexibility that I want my clients and shoppers to feel when they are styled or purchase items from me. I don’t just have 1 type of clothing or styling preference. BLK Style + Fashion, thrives from being able to step outside of the box and look different each time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to try different Black owned restaurants and coffee shops. Some of my favorite places are, Turkey Leg Hut, Breakfast Klub, and Throughgood Coffee. As far as places to visit, I would recommend shopping at the Galleria or The Webster. Hanging outside at the McGovern Centennial Gardens. Catching a movie, at the Rooftop Cinema, in River Oaks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my family and friends who have inspired, motivated, and challenged me to start my business. Without them, BLK Style + Fashion, wouldn’t be the same. I particularly want to shout out my partner and sister, who have from the start, helped me with the nitty gritty, like shipping packages and labels, to planning larger fashion events and photoshoots. I appreciate their consistent feedback and challenge to push me to greatness and nothing less.
