We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Imo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risk, the “right risk” is always a way to honor what you are really passionate about. When someone has an idea or something they want to complete but the journey to actually obtaining it may be a challenge, one may call it taking a risk. To leave a place of comfort to go to a place of destiny but traveling the unknown route is certainly taking a risk. Ultimately when we take risk, it’s to achieve a goal that is important to us and will be impactful however the road to get there and how you start may be a little uncomfortable. Taking risk for me has to be selfish in a sense, you know there is something that does not seem comfortable about the start but when you remember the WHY, you realize that it’s something that has to be done. I have taken risk before for educational advancement as well as being an entrepreneur living out my purpose. I am so pleased and thankful to where God has brought me and excited about where I am going!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
SIMTE is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that uplifts and mentors teenage girls and young adult women. We place emphasis on girls who have experienced any type of adversity and let them know they are resilient, important and “more than enough.” We are a new nonprofit in Houston and since conception due to the pandemic we had only been able to host virtual events. The benefit of having our virtual events has been that we’ve been able to reach girls across the country and not just here in the Houston area. This year we are hosting our first in-person event in Houston for teen girls and college young ladies to get them ready for a successful start to the new school year and we couldn’t be more excited! The thing that set’s us apart from other nonprofits is that we operate from a strength’s perspective meaning we like to help girls identify their own strengths and potential that they already have within. We also found that many nonprofits focus on one or the other age groups, but we wanted to make sure we allowed access and resources to teens and young adult women. With teens going through peer pressure and identity crisis and young adult women are challenged with their collegiate experience, relationships and careers. Mental health, the arts and literacy are at the foundation of our nonprofit. To the reader who may think “well I haven’t experienced any trauma or adversity”, guess what this is tailored for you as well! We want to make sure we create a space for all participants to feel comfortable in speaking their truth, accessing resources and networking with other likeminded young ladies.
If I could say that I am proud of anything thus far from my journey with starting SIMTE, it is honestly listening to some of our girls speak up and share their stories no matter their background. Just the mere fact that they have the confidence to speak makes me so proud and honored to even be a part of this chapter with them!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have mellowed out a lot since my college days and now being a wife and Mom lol, so my version of having a good time is a lot different! Give me swank coffee shop, somewhere to walk around in the sunshine at a park or outdoors somewhere downtown and checking out live jazz at Phil & Derek’s. We would of course visit museums, have lunch at some local spots, one being Mo Better Brews.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to all the women and mentors I had growing up who were such a strong example. From mentors in the church, organizations and family, especially my Mother and Grandmother’s. To all the mentees I have every been matched with, communicated with or encouraged, I am proud of you and keep going! To all the young ladies that SIMTE (She Is More Than Enough) current and future, you are so deserving, and YOU are the reason we keep going! Last but certainly not least, to my supportive husband, Kelvin and our 3 sons, Jeremiah, Jacob & Joshua I love you 4 forever and thank you for letting me pour just enough into SIMTE for it to be what it is today!
