We had the good fortune of connecting with Jatziri Barron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jatziri, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I see risk as the currency of success, but a type of currency that when paid you get more in return than what you give. It’s all about the perspective of course! When we take chances we open the door to opportunity… sometimes we end up where we wanted and sometimes completely different, but we always arrive to a place where we can evolve either in knowledge, perspective, professionally… you name it. In my career for example, becoming a full-time artist was a risk that I was really scared of taking, but that I couldn’t afford missing. The moment I changed my perspective from a problem-finder mentality to a solution/opportunity-seeker one, was when I opened myself to abundance. If it wasn’t for taking the chance, I would still be working as a full-time server wishing I had more time to do what I actually love!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work is a mix between conceptual, abstract, and figurative art and I use many different mediums in order freely represent what I need. Sometimes being colorful abstracts, others studies of the figure, and some others being both figurative and abstract! A mix, a connection, a fusion with the best of all worlds.. the unconscious process of abstract art, combined with the expression and story telling of the figure allows my artwork to be provocative and effective. It represents the way the conscious and unconscious world depend on each other.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely if they’re into the Arts, I would take them to the new Kinder building of the MFAH! A walk through Discovery Green or the Bayou Park if they like the outdoors and of course some fun at downtown Houston at night.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Big shoutout to my family who is always supportive, my artist friends that pushed me to make a living out of art, and of course each and everyone of my present and past clients for appreciating and supporting creatives like me!
