We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmine Tolder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jazmine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started Pearls Balloon Bar right during COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that I was working as an assistant manager doing loans right before I got laid off. When that happened I felt defeated. I was tired and knew I needed to come up with a plan. I was no longer settling for your good ,but it’s not your turn just yet. I was done trying to fit in at companies that didn’t value me. I was tired of having to tone myself down just to be overworked and underpaid. I always had to work hard and smile even when I was passed up. So I told myself no more! This ends now ,and from that moment “Pearls Balloon Bar” was born. I’ve always dreamed of being my own boss. So, getting laid off just turned into a blessing in the midst of a storm. I was now ready to work towards my own dreams. I was blessed to be able to create a space where I could be me on my own terms.

What should our readers know about your business?
My love for fashion ,and degree in visual merchandising has played a big role in my start to event planning. Back in 2015 I planned my own wedding ,and did my own decor. So I knew in this field I had to be innovative, creative, and have a good eye for details. I was able to teach myself most of the business ,and I’m still learning everyday. My brand is a reflection of me; bold, vibrant, fun and full of good vibes. No vision or idea is not good enough for my business. If I can envision it, I’ll give my all to see my client’s dreams come true. Pearl’s Balloon Bar is a creative space for people to create the things ,or vision they’ve dreamed of. With so much violence going on it was a core value for me to be able to spread more love through my artistry. My business is a safe space where my clients and I are allowed to have fun on our terms. My motto is Relax, have fun ,and let me bring the party to you. I offer full event planning, balloon decor, photo booth entertainment ,and party rentals. Like anything you have to work hard for what you want. It wasn’t easy ,but with God, prayer, perseverance and hard work I’m doing great. In the beginning I almost let the fear of failure and not having the support I wanted hold me back. Thank God I didn’t let that happen. I take nothing for granted and appreciate all of my clients who’ve booked me. I treat them like family and try to give everybody my all. You see I am my brand so what you see is what you get with me. My integrity and name means everything.

If I can inspire one person to start the business ,or bring others joy then my job is done. I just want to inspire people to enjoy life, and live in the moment. I’m not waiting for people to celebrate me. I’m throwing my own party and celebrating myself. I don’t care how small my business is, I celebrate every win. It takes hustle, faith, strength and courage to be an entrepreneur. Nobody sees the behind the scenes ,or late nights you put in. So, listen there’s no reward without risk you have to bet on yourself. Also, don’t worry about the support you don’t have. Just appreciate the support you do have. I’m proud that I created a brand that allows me to create, and show my artistry. I’m finally able to decide my own worth. I’m now in this game called life and not on the sidelines. My business may be small right now ,but I have a big heart and big aspirations. I’m planting the seeds now ,so my business can keep growing in the right direction. So please stay tuned.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to network with other vendors, You may be jealous of the next person ,and the whole time they’re admiring you. Sometimes you can cancel your blessings before you even get the chance to enjoy it. Also, be kind, supportive, and love one another. Don’t knock the next person hustle when it’s enough business for everybody. I’m the definition of started from the bottom and didn’t give up now I’m here. Nothing was given to me. I earned EVERYTHING. So, do the work ,keep God first ,and your business will flourish.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ador for good vibes, drinks and food is my favorite thing to do. Oh, we’d for sure have to try a selfie museum for all the cute picture booths. Galleria waterfall for some nice serenity vibes and a picnic. Bike riding in midtown and food at Bar 5015. Sunday Funday at anyone of these places : Ador, Graces, Max Wine Dive, Kamp Houston ,or Prospect Park is a must. Also, maybe hit up a karaoke bar for wine and some Anita Baker.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without God. He has truly been good to me ,and blessed me with a great family. My husband Roy, has been my rock and so supportive. He pushes ,motivates ;and helps me stay focused. His love and compassion for me has been everything. He goes hard for his family and I’m really blessed to have him in my corner. When I’m feeling down or overwhelmed he reminds me of how far I’ve come. He sends me positive quotes daily, and lets me know there’s still work to be done. Also, my mom and son they’re always willing to help me get the job done. My mom was a hairstylist and I watched her work hard to provide for me and my sister. She supports me, keeps me balanced ,and listens to all my ideas. I couldn’t do it without my family. I just wish my sister was still living to share my joy. I know she’s proud of me though ,and that keeps me going.
