We had the good fortune of connecting with Jehzel Vigoa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jehzel, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor for success would be to always believe in yourself and your work. Know that your hard work speaks for itself and others will notice and want to work with you. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
A truthful reason I pushed myself so hard to get my name out there and make a name for myself was to prove wrong all those who didn’t believe in me or said I couldn’t do it. This made me want to work harder than ever. But I thank those who supported me each step of the way.
A quote that I have always loved is “Opportunities don’t happen. You create them” by Chris Grosser
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think outside the box. When a client comes to me for a photo shoot, the wheels in my brain start to turn and I imagine the different decorations for setups or how I can edit the images to their needs. I like to be as creative as possible.
One photographer, a few years back, asked a question on their social media on “What makes your images different from other photographers?” and “why should a client book with you?” Since then I would ask myself those same questions frequently. I’ve tried to provide different services in my area compared to other local photographers. I’ve also changed the way I edit to make for more creative and elaborate images opposed to the basic, click a bottom and send, as others do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To start, I LOVE FOOD! I’m a huge foodie and finding great food to eat is a big plus. One of my favorite restaurants is Bubba’s 33. The wings are amazing and their signature Shotgun sauce is the best. Another personal favorite is El Patio at the Katy food truck park. The Chicharrones from one of the Venezuelan trucks are to die for.
At night I like to drive around in my slingshot with the lights turned on and the music turned up around discovery green. All the kids and parents will come up to take a picture, as well as the cops will stop and ask for a selfie.
I also love the outdoors, so walking around Herman Park and visiting the Japanese Garden and McGovern’s Garden is relaxing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest shoutout would go to my parents and husband. My parents for cheering me on and helping with the kids so I could work and take on sessions. Also for letting me build my studio on their property. That’s a huge support for me as it helped me expand into studio photography 4 years ago.
My husband for helping me reach potential clients and being the handy-man I need for building sets and around the studio.
Now I try to give tips and encouragement to upcoming teenagers wanting to become photographers. Community over competition is the way to go.
