We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Rosso and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly it was a whole lot of encouragement from family and close friends. I have always loved to bake, it’s therapeutic for me. But I kind of thought my friends and family were just being nice when they said they liked it. A friend suggested I make several cookies and post it on my Instagram, so one day I finally did. I was overwhelmed by the response. That’s when I decided to take the leap. Without the support of the people around me, it would have never happened.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to see how happy people are when they enjoy what I bake. It sounds cliché but it’s really all about that for me. I make sure to not make huge sales. As odd as that may sound for a small business that hopes to grow. For now, I feel like when I make dozens and dozens at one time, I risk it losing its magic just a bit. Although I’m sure with practice I can get there someday. I will admit I have run into a few challenges though. There are so many amazing and talented bakers around here, it can be difficult to set yourself apart. But I do my best to stay true to who I am and doing what makes me happy within this. I think it’ll constantly be challenging in some way or another, I just have to keep my focus where I feel it should be at that time. If I overwhelm myself it’ll effect everything, my baking might not be as good and my family might not be as happy. It’s a process I have faith I’ll find my way around no matter what.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man, do I love Houston! I’ve been here for about 12 years now. It’s the first place I felt at home. Hands down, my number one place will always be Kenny & Ziggy’s Delicatessen, the best place for any meal on any day. Can’t say enough good things about it. But I’d also suggest the several parks, the Water Wall is my favorite spot, I remember visiting when I was little. Once the weather warms up, Miller Outdoor theater is always fun. I realize that I’m leaving so much out but you really can’t go wrong with anything, the beauty of this city is that there really is something for everyone.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel like I owe huge thank you’s to a few folks. My mom, my sister, my daughters, a few close friends, some local small business owners I’ve met along the way. But my biggest thank you has to go my husband, Brian. I have a whole cheer squad behind me but he’s definitely the loudest one. He is always ready to help where he can. Whether it’s getting supplies together, making last minute runs for ingredients or just keeping our little girls busy while I work. Every bit helps.
